BCS Rankings 2011: Who Benefits Most from Stanford's Loss?

Austin GreenNov 13, 2011

The formerly undefeated Stanford Cardinal stumbled in Week 11, opening the BCS door for several teams.

With Stanford's 23-point loss to Oregon, and Boise State's last second defeat to TCU, the top five as we know it has been obliterated.

These three teams will benefit most from the fall of the unbeatens.

No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide

Had fourth ranked Stanford beaten No. 7 Oregon, they would have leapfrogged Alabama in the standings.

But with their loss, only three teams sit in the way of an LSU-Alabama rematch.

No. 2 Oklahoma State is 10-0, but they still have to face sixth ranked Oklahoma in the last week of the season.

The aforementioned Ducks could potentially surpass the Tide, but 'Bama has a stronger schedule and lost to LSU by just three points.

And Oklahoma may surpass them if they impress against OSU, but their three-point loss to Texas Tech is particularly damning.

With just a little help, Alabama will be in prime position for a rematch in the BCS championship game.

No. 7 Oregon Ducks

The Ducks proved who is really the Pac-12's best after dropping 53 points on Stanford.

Now they just need to win their last two games (USC and Oregon State) and they will finish no lower than fourth in the final BCS rankings.

Personally, I would much rather see an Oregon-LSU rematch than one featuring Alabama. The Ducks are the only team in the country that's proven they can score on the Tigers.

Also, I expect Alabama to get punished because a) they won't win their conference, and b) they lost more recently.

If Oklahoma State stumbles, Oregon will have a very strong national title argument.

No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners

The Sooners didn't even play in Week 11, but they will still rise into the top five.

They have a tough schedule to end the season, as they take on No. 25 Baylor this Saturday and second-ranked OSU in the season finale.

If they win their last three games, the Sooners will have five victories over ranked opponents. They have also yet to face LSU, which could be their biggest key to reaching the national title game.

All three teams benefit greatly from the losses of Stanford and Boise State. But if all three win out, Oklahoma will face LSU for the BCS title.
