UFC on Fox 1 Results: Just How Good Can Junior dos Santos Become?

Tim McTiernanNov 13, 2011

On Saturday night, Junior dos Santos became the first undisputed Brazilian heavyweight champion in the history of the UFC, when he knocked out Cain Velasquez in only 64 seconds.

Dos Santos is known for his outstanding boxing, which he has used to get to the top of the heavyweight division.

However, he has more tools at his disposal. We just haven't seen them.

Dos Santos has spent 13 seconds—yes, only 13—on his back in the UFC.

It's well known that dos Santos is going to try to win by knocking you out, so you would think that everyone's gameplan would be to get him down. They just can't do it.

His takedown defense is incredible, and its been seen that even when he does get taken down, he gets right back up.

However, it is bound to happen eventually that someone gets JDS down, and he doesn't spring right back up.

He has a brown belt in jiu-jitsu under the Nogueira brothers. He is no slouch on the ground.

We've basically seen nothing of his ground game yet.

Imagine if he is just as dangerous off his back as he is on the feet.

It sounds crazy, but nobody knows what the ground game of JDS is like.

If his ground game is half as good as his stand up, JDS could become the most dominant heavyweight champion in UFC history.

His next couple fights will be very telling.

He will likely be taking on these three fighters over his next three fights: Brock Lesnar, Alistair Overeem and Cain Velasquez again.

He gets through all three of them, and he becomes the most dominant heavyweight champion in UFC history.

He can do it.
