UFC on FOX: Will Junior Dos Santos Still Be Champ in 2013?

Jeffrey McKinneyNov 13, 2011

At UFC on FOX 1, Junior dos Santos proved once again that he is one of MMA’s most dangerous fighters.

Dos Santos was able to capture the UFC heavyweight title in just 64 seconds, defeating Cain Velasquez by TKO.

The win not only put dos Santos at the top of the heavyweight division, but should make him one of MMA’s top stars.

Dos Santos has proven he could go at it with the best the UFC has had to offer thus far.

But what happens in 2012 will prove just how good dos Santos is.

Dos Santos' first test will be the winner of Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem.

Lesnar and Overeem pose different threats for the new champ.

Lesnar will be stronger and a better wrestler than Dos Santos has ever seen before. Although he has held his own against great wrestlers like Velasquez and Shane Carwin, Dos Santos has never faced anyone like Lesnar.

Overeem on the other hand focuses more on striking and has a submission game to go along with it.

Although dos Santos has faced good strikers in the past, he’s never fought someone who has a decorated background like Overeem.

It would be easy to say dos Santos could walk right through Overeem and Lesnar, but in the world of MMA, anything can happen. He could just as easily get caught or be stuck in a bad position.

Even if dos Santos does get past Overeem and Lesnar, he still has a tough road ahead of him.

Challengers like Frank Mir and Cheick Kongo could be waiting in the wings.

Dos Santos has the potential to remain champion well into 2013 and beyond.

The only problem is this is MMA.

As dominant as someone can look winning a title, they can lose it just as quickly.
