Pacquiao vs. Marquez: What Is Next for Both Fighters After Their Third Fight?
After a third battle between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, there is still plenty of doubt. Sure, Manny has the technical edge at two wins and one draw, to no wins for Marquez. But each decision has been controversial, and there still really is no closure here for Pacquiao.
He was hoping to blow through Marquez and ride the momentum into a fight with Mayweather in May. That fight may still happen, but not for the same reasons. Mayweather had to have watched this fight and felt like he would blow through Pac-Man easily.
If he had any doubts before, he must feel very confident now. He may decide to make Pacquiao wait one more fight. That could be Tim Bradley, who destroyed the over-matched, 40-year-old Joel Casamayor in one of the undercard fights.
If it isn't Mayweather, Bradley seems like the most likely next opponent for Pacquiao. Marquez's is a different and more complicated situation.
He is 38 years old, and he mentioned retirement as he sat dejected in his dressing room after the disappointing decision. It doesn't seem like he would want to go out on a fight like this, yet he has to know, he can't do this forever.
Matching him against a speedy, elusive fighter will likely render similar results as his fight with Mayweather did. Equally unattractive for him and the public has to be a rematch with Pacquiao.
If I were Marquez, I'd take one more fight, against a hand picked opponent and call it a career. True boxing fans know his mettle, if they didn't before, they surely know after Saturday night.
