Pacquiao vs. Marquez Results: Marquez Didn't Do Enough to Dethrone the Champion

Brian MaziqueNov 13, 2011

The old adage says, you have to take the title away from the champion, and Juan Manuel Marquez did not do that on Saturday night. Instead, he took bad advice from his corner-man, and coasted in the final two rounds, expecting to win a decision. Not in Vegas Juan, not in Vegas.

The fight was very close throughout; each fighter had their moments. Marquez certainly had a better showing in this fight, primarily because he wasn't knocked down, as he had been in both of their previous fights. That still doesn't mean you're winning.

When he went into the corner after the 11th round, Marquez was told he was winning. It seemed he heeded that advice and really didn't take the fight to Manny Pacquiao in the final round. As it stood, Pacquiao escaped with a majority decision.

One judge did have it a draw, the others had Pacquiao winning 116-112. That is the same score Harold Lederman had the fight scored as. In any event, when a fight is that close, you can't afford to take a round off. That is especially the case when you are the challengers.

Pacquiao seemed frustrated and dissatisfied with the outcome. When he was asked about Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the post-fight interview, he seemed out of it, and far less excited and eager than he has before.

Floyd should be encouraged about the potential fight, as he completely demolished Marquez, and Pacquiao has struggled with him three times.

Styles do make fights, but Pacquiao would have preferred to win with more style.
