Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Another Rematch Is Pointless After Shocking Pac-Man Win

Eric BallNov 13, 2011

Sigh.

That’s the only emotion I could feel after hearing Michael Buffer announce that Manny Pacquiao had defeated Juan Manuel Marquez on Sunday night.

Please don’t subject us to a fourth match.

By my count, the TV announcers' count and seemingly all of Twitter’s count…. Marquez was the winner.

He had a counter move for everything Pac-man threw as it turned into a counter clinic. When you look like you could run a marathon after six rounds of fighting…I think you’ve done a good job of protecting yourself.

Sure, Pacquiao landed a few big punches, and I know the judges noticed, but it was clear that Marquez landed the majority of the punches.

One key tactical error came in the break between Rounds 11 and 12. Marquez’s camp told him he was winning the fight and needed to watch out for the knockout.

In the 12th round, he played very cautiously and that ended up being the difference. If Marquez would have kept the pedal to the metal in the final round, the history books would have been re-written. Instead, Marquez is left claiming he was robbed for the third time.

So after 36 rounds of Marquez-Pacquiao…we still don’t know who the true winner is. The aggressive style of Pacquiao is the perfect complement to the patient, counter style of Marquez.

Clearly, they are very evenly matched…we don’t need to be reminded of that for a fourth time.

Besides, if Pacquiao keeps it somewhat close again…he’ll be the runaway winner. Then what, a fifth bout?

Marquez will go to the grave wondering why the judges were so biased against him and that’s a shame. He put out one heck of a performance and has nothing to show for it.

Even if he wins Round 4, it’s still 2-1-1 in favor of Pac-man.

Marquez can’t win at this point, and that’s a travesty.
