Pacquiao vs. Marquez: What Is Floyd Mayweather Jr. so Scared About?

Allan JiangNov 12, 2011

Remember when the general view was that Oscar De La Hoya would be too big and strong for Manny Pacquiao?

Well the general view going into Pacquiao vs. Marquez III was that Dinamita had no chance.

He wouldn’t even last the distance.

Boy was that general view dead wrong.

This article will analyze Pacquiao vs. Marquez and ask the question what is Floyd Mayweather Jr. scared of?

Fight Recap

1 of 7

I scored the fight 115-113 in favor of Juan Manuel Márquez and I have no idea how a judge scored it 116-112 in favor of Pacquiao.

Márquez fought a tactically brilliant fight where Pacquiao couldn’t connect any of his power punches and was left frustrated for the majority of the fight.

When the final bell rang, Pacquiao didn’t even raise his hand in victory.

Should Juan Manuel Márquez Have Come out Swinging During the Later Rounds?

2 of 7

Going into the final round, you heard Nacho Bernstein tell Juan Manuel Márquez to stay away from Manny Pacquiao's haymaker.

It's not Márquez's style to swing from the hip like Charlie Zelenoff.

Márquez is a skilled counter puncher and if a judge scored it 116-112 in favor of Pacquiao (which is absurd) then Dinamita’s only chance was a dynamite like knock out.

Juan Manuel Márquez’s Legacy

3 of 7

Like the fight against Chris John and his two previous fights with Manny Pacquiao—the decision could have gone Juan Manuel Márquez’s way.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say it was daylight robbery like José Luis Ramírez against Pernell Whitaker in France.

Though tonight's decision was wrong.

However…we all want to see Mayweather vs. Pacquiao and this decision preserves that historic fight.

Manny Pacquiao Declining?

4 of 7

Manny Pacquiao hasn’t managed to knock out an opponent since Miguel Cotto in 2009.

Not since Érik Morales has Pacquiao looked so lackluster.

Where was the pressure? Where was the blinding speed? Where was the right hand which according to Bob Arum, is what frightens Floyd Mayweather Jr.?

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Must Take the Initiative to Seek out a Fight

5 of 7

It’s absolutely disgraceful of Floyd Mayweather Jr. to hint that Manny Pacquiao has been taking performing enhancing drugs.

Yet I wonder if Mayweather’s camp is still going to use that slanderous excuse to avoid a fight with Pacquiao even after tonight.

Pacquiao was so average, was so jaded that there is no way he was using performing enhancing drugs (and he has never in the past).

Mayweather must seek out to fight Pacquiao before the Filipino decides to retire.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Should Stay Quiet About Tonight's Decision

6 of 7

I hope Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn’t say "Oh well Manny Pacquiao lost twice against Juan Manuel Márquez, so why would I fight him?"

People should remind Mayweather of his fight with José Luis Castillo where Castillo took advantage of Mayweather’s torn rotator cuff and won the fight (should have been awarded the win).

Yet it was scored a unanimous decision to Mayweather who promptly shut out Castillo in a rematch.

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao

7 of 7

I want Manny Pacquiao to serve karma to Floyd Mayweather Jr., but my brain says Mayweather will easily counter Pacquiao and will cruise to a unanimous decision.

Pacquiao’s only chance is to rush Mayweather with a flurry of punches and knock him out.

We didn’t see this type of action from Pacquiao tonight and he shouldn’t have won.

So, one has to assume Mayweather will be too slick for Pacquiao.

If this fight never happens the ultimate irony will be that Mayweather would have won just like Roy Jones Jr. would have taken Dariusz Michalczewski to school.

Fear is what is holding Mayweather back.

Not a fear of Pacquiao, but fearing he may lose his zero in a controversial decision like tonight.

Like that fateful night on the  Aug. 3, 1996 when he was robbed of a chance to compete for an Olympic Gold medal against Serafim Todorov—the last man to officially beat Mayweather.
