Zack Ryder and the Main Event: Should He Be More Serious Bro?

Tyson JonesNov 13, 2011

Lately there's been some debate over "Long Island Iced Z" and if this gimmick can get Zack Ryder to the main-event scene and allow him to capture a World Championship. That debate centers around the common "I can't take him seriously" phrase.

With that being said...should Zack really be more serious? I mean, Zack got over off being that goofy guy with his own webshow on Z:True Long Island Story and isn't it sound strategy to stick with what got you to the point where you wanna be? I mean, standing out is a big thing in WWE and nobody stands out quite like Woo-Z so why change that?

Aside from that could Zack even pull off a serious character? And in what role do we place him? Boy Scout Cena? Rebel Punk? Borderline Heel Orton? Honestly, Cena looks like the closest thing to what Zack could pull off. Maybe he could pull off a rebel thing, but that would require a counter-culture type thing which makes me think he'd still be more into his "Long Island Iced Z" gimmick than anything else.

On the other hand, maybe WWE could go about making him a main-event heel. It's a long shot, but maybe it could work. If so, maybe he could go with a bully-type gimmick. Not your typical "bigger, stronger" bully but more "make fun of you, then hide behind Brodus Clay." I like this idea, and at the same time, I don't like this one. I like it because it gives Brodus something to do, and could be helpful to elevating both men. I don't like it because I prefer a Zack Ryder as a face.

Personally, I believe Zack is fine as is. Why can't our WWE/World Heavyweight Champion take care and spike his hair? Why can't he wear sunglasses indoors? Is there really anything wrong with having a World Champion be a little silly? I mean, isn't that why we like him in the first place? Or am I missing something here?

For those of you who say Zack should be more serious, what do you mean? Should he wear a suit and tie? She he lose the headbands? Should he stop using the term Broski? Is it the catchphrase that throws you off? I'm just curious.

Now, before anyone says anything, I'll let you know I'm not saying Zack should be in the World Title picture anytime soon. Give him a couple of years and a run with the U.S. Title or three, and see how the crowd reacts to him as a champion.

I may be in the minority, but I think Zack Ryder, in his current gimmick could do great as a champion at any level. With most people, they seem to not really care they are champion. Mark Henry and Del Rio are exceptions, but Beth is more focused on keeping the other girls "in their place," Dolph hardly mentions that he's champion, and Kofi (granted it's hard when your partner is out,) rarely talks about being Champion—a must when you're supposed to be the new foundation for the division.

Even Cody, who was doing an awesome job as I.C. Champion seems to have lost a few steps since he debuted the new strap.

As Champion, I think Zack Ryder would make sure the world knew he was the title holder. On RAW, Smackdown, and Z:True Long Island Story you would see the belt. He'd probably have more backstage segments, plugging himself as champion, at the very least, and really make it seem like he was proud to be the champ.

So, should Zack Ryder be more serious, bro?
