Maryland vs. Notre Dame: 5 Things We Learned from Irish's Win

William PenfieldNov 12, 2011

The Notre Dame Irish improved to 7-3 tonight after a blowout, 45-21, victory over the Maryland Terrapins.

After the loss to USC three weeks ago, the Irish have ripped off three wins in a row scoring a combined 125 points during the streak.

Despite having an extremely ugly helmet on his head, Tommy Rees had one of his best games this year to lead the Irish to victory.

If Rees keeps playing like this, the Irish may have a chance against Stanford on Nov. 26 in Palo Alto.

Rees Redeems Himself

1 of 5

Over the past couple weeks Tommy Rees has played some mediocre football but he had a great game tonight against Maryland.

Rees tossed for 296 yards and two scores on 30-of-37 passing in the win.

For a quarterback who has been labeled as having a "noodle arm," Rees sure made all the throws tonight.

The Irish will need Rees to keep up his high level of play if they want any chance at beating Stanford on Nov. 26.

Notre Dame will go as far as Rees takes them.

Michael Floyd Is Back

2 of 5

After two subpar games in a row, Michael Floyd came to play against the Maryland Terapins.

Floyd caught nine balls for 89 yards and a touchdown and would have had more if the game wasn't a blowout.

In his previous two games, Floyd only caught a combined 11 balls for 114 yards but he did score in each of them.

These are the types of beastly games Notre Dame fans have come to expect from Floyd and they will need him to keep it up if they want to beat Stanford on Nov. 26.

Two Headed Rushing Attack Emerging

In the win against Maryland, Jonas Gray showed he can be a real threat on the ground.

He had some pretty good games before, but tonight he broke the 100-yard mark for the first time this season to go along with two touchdowns.

In addition to leading rusher, Cierre Wood, the Irish may have a serious two headed rushing attack emerging to help out Tommy Rees on offense.

Wood fell just short of the 100-yard mark with 99 yards and added a score.

Their Helmets Are Horrendous

4 of 5

This could easily qualify as the "what were you thinking?" moment of the week.

These helmets are terrible. They look like an art project made by a kid on Saint Patrick's Day.

College football is trending towards changing uniforms but the Notre Dame uniforms are something that shouldn't be messed with.

They represent the tradition of Notre Dame football back when they were actually a top program in the country.

Just because you stink now doesn't mean you have to go and change things up.

Luckily for them, they played Maryland who wore the ugliest uniforms in sports today.

Maryland Stinks

5 of 5

After plucking Randy Edsall from UConn, there were high hopes for Maryland football this season.

Those hopes have been crushed by shaky quarterback play from Danny O'Brien and a 2-8 start.

It would certainly be the wrong idea to put Edsall on the hot seat, but people will begin to question the firing of Ralph Friedgen after being named the ACC Coach of the Year with a 9-4 record in 2010.
