Auburn vs. Georgia: 5 Things We Learned from Bulldog's Win over Tigers

William PenfieldNov 12, 2011

With their destiny in their own hands, in terms of the SEC East, the Georgia Bulldogs won their eighth game in row in dominant fashion over Auburn.

The Tigers never stood a chance in the 45-7 Bulldog victory, as Georgia scored 38 unanswered points after Auburn's only touchdown in the first quarter.

If the Bulldogs beat Kentucky at home next Saturday they will punch their ticket to the SEC Championship game on Dec. 3 in Atlanta, GA.

Bulldogs Are the Best Team in the SEC East

1 of 5

With an 0-2 start to the season, the Georgia Bulldogs could have easily packed it in and called it a season but they didn't.

Since the loss to South Carolina on Sept. 10, the Bulldogs have run off eight straight victories to put themselves in first place in the SEC East.

Despite losing to the Gamecocks, the Bulldogs sit a half a game ahead of them in the SEC East standings and will head to the SEC Championship game with a win next Saturday over Kentucky.

Aaron Murray Is Much Improved

2 of 5

What started off as a mediocre season for Georgia Bulldog's quarterback Aaron Murray, has now turned into a magnificent one.

The low point for Murray in 2011 came in a 24-20 win against Florida when he completed just 15-of-34 passes and threw an interception; but he has been great since.

He had his best game of the season against Auburn today on 14-of-18 passing with 224 yards, four touchdowns and rating of 255.6.

The Bulldogs will need Murray to keep up this level of play if they want any chance at beating LSU in the SEC Championship game.

SEC Championship Will Likely Be Georgia vs. LSU

3 of 5

With the win, the Georgia Bulldogs have set themselves up rather nicely for a berth in the SEC Championship game.

As long as they can beat Kentucky at home next week, a team with one SEC win this season, they will head to Atlanta.

It is hard to say anything is for certain in college football, especially with LSU facing Arkansas in their last game, but it is likely that the Tigers will travel to Atlanta as well.

If A.J. Murray can keep playing like he has been and the defense shows up, the Bulldogs may actually have a chance against the Tigers.

Mark Richt's Job Is Safe

4 of 5

After the Bulldogs' 0-2 start, Mark Richt's job status was rumored to be shaky but that is no longer after they won eight straight games.

Winning seven in a row before today, Richt's job was probably already safe but after the win against Auburn and a likely SEC Championship berth, there is no way he will be fired.

Auburn Stinks

5 of 5

Auburn's loss to the Bulldogs today marks their fourth of the season coming off a National Championship.

The Tigers never looked like a very good team this year but still somehow remained to be ranked.

After today's loss they are likely to fall out of the rankings, probably for good, and it seems as though the loss of Cam Newton, Nick Fairley and others to the NFL has been too much for them to overcome.
