What Happens If The LA Angels Do Not Sign Mark Teixeira?

Scott FenderDec 16, 2008

It is becoming increasingly more evident that the Angels may miss out on free agent Mark Teixeira.

If he does not stay with the Angels, I personally hope that he does not sign with Boston, but instead Baltimore or Washington. But, wherever he lands outside of Anaheim, the Angels are ready to counter the loss. I do not know what their game plan is, but I can only speculate which is that I am here to write about.

The Angels are seriously considering signing Manny Ramirez if they lose Teixeira. I do not like this signing, all biases aside. He is aging, does not hustle, and wants a lot of money. The Angels have more money invested in an aging outfield than even the Yankees. Garrett Anderson has apparently been shown the door which breaks every fan's heart. However, Reggie Willits is capable to platoon or start. I am not sure if Juan Rivera has been re-signed or not, but I can only hope the Angels consider bringing Rivera and Anderson back instead of signing Manny.

Tony Reagins has stated that the Angels will possibly go after Manny if unable to sign Teixeira. But Reagins has stated, “We have another direction we’d want to go before we went that route,” in refrence to signing Ramirez.

Let us look at what very well could happen if the Angels sign Manny.  That would give them an old, crippling outfield. This is where the trades would begin. With the excess amount of talented outfielders, the Angels would likely try and move some. Willits, Gary Matthews, Jr. and others could be shopped.

If Matthews is to be traded, the Angels would have to eat much of that contract to find a buyer. But who to go after? San Diego very well could take Willits, Adenhart, and another prospect or two for Peavy. Milwaukee was talking about possibly moving Prince Fielder. The Angels need to do whatever they can to go after him if this is true. Fielder is young and could be a staple at the corner for a team.

But, the Angels are not big on wheeling and dealing. Instead, they see a problem and look in house for the solution. If Mark goes, then look for spring training tryouts for Figgins, Wood, Napoli, Morales, Quinlan, and other prospects. Also, the Angels could bring back Anderson and/or Rivera and ask him/them to shift to first base.

The Angels and Mike Scioscia are crafty.  If they miss out on Teixeira, they will not panic. ESPN, sports writers, and Bleacher Report, will likely cast the Angels of as losers this offseason.  But the Angels do not quit and will not let one player ruin the franchise. Angels fans: no need to worry, the team will be OK with or without Mark Teixeira.

Bleacher Creatures, what are your thoughts on what the Angels should do without Teixeira?
