UFC on Fox: Undefeated Cain Velasquez Will Keep Title vs. Junior dos Santos

Michael DixonNov 12, 2011

We know that Cain Velasquez can win the UFC Heavyweight Championship. He proved that beyond the shadow of a doubt with his TKO win of Brock Lesnar in October 2010.

But given that he hasn't fought since then, as he's been sidelined with a shoulder injury, how will he respond?

Also, when he beat Lesnar, he was the underdog. Lesnar had looked unstoppable. So, while Velasquez certainly came into that fight prepared, he really had nothing to lose. That's about the most dangerous thing you can ever get from a fighter.

Now, he's the champion, coming in ice cold. So, how will he respond in his first title defense?

Well, in UFC, it doesn't take long for anything to happen. A good punch or two can completely change the course of the fight, so predicting it is hard.

But Velasquez will do just fine. He'll defend his title and move on to the next challenger.

Bodog has Velasquez (-170), as the favorite, although not by any tremendous amount. I just like his overall attack. I like the fact that he ends his fights early, although most MMA heavyweights do that.

More than anything, I like the fact that Velasquez hasn't lost a fight. Even if dos Santos has only lost one, how do you go against an undefeated champion? I certainly couldn't justify doing that.

Actually, I think the time off will serve as a good thing. Sure, he may be coming off of an injury and ring (or octagon) rust is a fear, but he hasn't been getting beaten up since October 2010.

On the other hand, dos Santos has had a fight since then. Yes, it's only one fight and he won it, but that's abuse that Velasquez just hasn't had to deal with.

He'll be focused and ready to fight for the first time in more than a year. Don't look for a title change to come tonight.
