Pacquiao vs Marquez: 3 Things Dinamita Must Do to Upset Pac-Man

Tim DanielsNov 12, 2011

Manny Pacquiao is a massive favorite against Juan Manuel Marquez as the two fighters meet for the third time on Saturday night. Marquez has kept both previous fights close, but could only manage a draw and a split-decision loss.

If he wants to pull off a huge upset inside MGM Grand Garden Arena tonight, here are three things he must accomplish.

Start Quickly

Marquez needs to show the judges right away that's he going to be able to stick with Pacquiao. Just like the audience, the judges will enter the night with preconceived notions about what is going to happen—they're only human.

It's Dinamita's job to prove everybody wrong early. Perhaps even win the first two rounds and force Pacquiao to start opening up. If he lets Pac-Man control the early rounds, the chances of his 38-year-old body making a comeback are extremely low.

Use New Power Effectively

It was Marquez's goal to add more power before tonight's fight since he had to bulk up anyway. Figuring out a way to successfully harness that added strength will be vital—especially because Pacquiao has said it will slow his opponent down.

Dinamita has used a counterattacking style in the past fights and just because he's added some pop doesn't mean he'll necessarily change his approach. If anything, he'll be more prepared to capitalize on Pacquiao's frustrations with his defensive scheme.

Go the Distance

Marquez has made it clear he believes the first two fights belonged to him and the judges unfairly helped Pacquiao. He can't let those previous decisions change the way he attempts to pull off the upset tonight. His best chance remains via decision.

The chances of knocking Pac-Man out are remote. Therefore, Marquez must maintain his composure, absorb some blows and stick to his game plan. He might never receive another chance as big as this one, so becoming overzealous would only work against him.

If Marquez can do all three of these things, Pacquiao will be in for a longer night than he anticipated.
