Velasquez vs. Dos Santos: Why Dos Santos Wins by Second-Round KO
In the biggest fight in UFC history, Junior dos Santos will win by a knockout in the second round, which is exactly what the challenger predicted.
If you’ve followed the sport of MMA through the past couple of years, then you already know that dos Santos and Velasquez are by far the best heavyweights the sport has to offer, and the UFC will showcase this live and free on Fox tonight at 8 p.m.
So picking a winner was extremely tough for me.
I went back and forth between these two, and quite frankly, because both guys have been so dominant in their MMA careers, I couldn’t picture either guy being in trouble.
Part of me felt like Velasquez's wrestling ability and ability to push the pace would give him the edge, while another part of me wanted to go with dos Santos' ability to always find that knockout shot.
Both fighters are very well-rounded, but they both have the edge in certain departments.
I give the edge to JDS in the standup department because not one guy has been able to stand with him in the UFC without getting dropped. Velasquez was a an All-American wrestler at Arizona State, so he has the wrestling.
Dos Santos is a blackbelt in BJJ so he has that edge, and Velasquez has the cardio.
The only way I see dos Santos winning this fight is by knockout or submission, and it has to come early.
The longer this fight goes on, the more it favors Velasquez because of his relentless cardio.
In case you don’t know, Velasquez has the best cardio in the heavyweight division, and he trains with welterweights at the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA).
So dos Santos has to turn Velasquez’s lights out early if he’s going to dethrone the champ.
Velasquez won’t be intimidated by dos Santos’ standup, and he will exchange with dos Santos early.
Dos Santos has to time his shots, and make the Velasquez pay for any mistakes he makes before he decides to take the fight to the ground.
I believe dos Santos does just that, and at the end of the night Bruce Buffer’s voice will be heard on the loud speakers saying, “and NEEWWW!”
