Pacquiao Vs. Marquez Weigh In: Why Added Weight Will Kill Marquez

Josh SchochNov 12, 2011

Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez weighed in recently, and Marquez has gained quite a bit of weight.  That weight will hurt Marquez more than it will help, and Pac-Man will be the winner of this fight.

Pacquiao weighed in at 143 pounds, while Marquez was 142.  Both fighters came in below the weight limit, and they seem very similar.

The last time Marquez was 142 pounds he was facing Floyd Mayweather in a fight that he lost in unanimous decision (120-107, 119-108, 118-109).  Granted Marquez was not as defined for that fight, the problem was that he looked slow.

Marquez could not keep up with Mayweather, and if he comes in that slow again Pac-Man is going to tear him apart.

Marquez is going to have to rely on landing a few solid punches in the early rounds to throw Pacquiao off.  If he can do that then he may prevent the onslaught, but he will probably be too slow to do so.

Pacquiao has beaten much bigger opponents with his speed, and this fight is not going to be as close as the last two because of this.

Perhaps Pacquiao knew that Marquez would be this heavy because he changed his training for this fight.  By sparring a day early he may have been trying to work off some rust to increase his speed.

If Pacquiao comes out early and shows that he is much quicker than Marquez he will be able to take advantage of times when Marquez leaves himself open.  By trying to knock Pac-Man out early Marquez will have to take risks, leaving himself open to a flurry of Pac-Man punches.

Pacquiao is looking to knock Marquez out and show that he is truly the better fighter.  If he can take advantage of Marquez's risky attack then we could see a knockout in the first few rounds.

Pac-Man has the clear advantage in this fight, and the extra weight Marquez has put on will only hold him back.
