Florida vs. South Carolina: 5 Halftime Adjustments for the Gamecocks

Max RauschNov 12, 2011

Despite horrendous off-field shenanigans and season ending injury to their best player the Gamecocks still have a chance at the SEC Title.  If USC can notch their second straight victory over the Gators and Auburn can take care of business against the UGA later tonight the Head Ball Coach and Co. will get a shot at one of the SEC West’s powerhouses.  Here’s 5 adjustments they need to make in the second half to take a step closer to Atlanta.

Spurrier's Game Management:

As painful as it must be for the Ol’ Ball Coach to abandon the Run and Gun he needs to keep in mind that the strengths of this team is defense and the running game.  If the Gamecocks are going to win this game Spurrier will need to play to his strengths remain patient and  stop going for it on every fourth down.

Hit Brantley:

Prior to kickoff Florida QB, John Brantley said his bum ankle is at about 80%. Charlie Weis revamped the offense to compensate for his lack of mobility.  If Ingram, Clowney and crew can lay a few good licks on the Gators’ hobbled QB they might be able to ice this game early in the second half

Penalties:

The Gamecocks set themselves back with penalties in each of their first three drives of the first half.  The hobbled Gamecocks are simply not good enough to play through penalty issues all game.  They need to clean it up in the second half.

Offensive Line:

The Gamecocks’ offensive linemen have easily been the biggest yellow flag liabilities so far.   They Gamecocks’ big men will need to continue to dominate the line of scrimmage and clean up their act in the second half.

Get Alshon the Damn Ball:

I don’t care what anybody says, Alshon Jeffery has to be frustrated with his lack of downfield opportunities this year.   While If I were Jeffery I might take a page out of TO’s book and just shoot his hand up at Connor Shaw.
