UFC on FOX Predictions: Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos
One of the most anticipated title bouts in UFC history will finally come to fruition as heavyweights Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos will meet for the UFC heavyweight title in the main event on UFC on Fox.
Velasquez is entering this bout after defeating Brock Lesnar last year at UFC 122, while dos Santos has gathered a seven-fight win streak, with his most recent victory coming against Shane Carwin at UFC 131.
Velasquez is one of the most accomplished wrestlers in the UFC today, also implementing a strong kickboxing background. The former Arizona State wrestling standout is also notorious for his pace and cardio, along with his work rate, making him one of the most difficult opponents to prepare for. As he ascended through the heavyweight rankings, Velasquez earned victories over notable opponents like Ben Rothwell, Cheick Kongo and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
The Brazilian's UFC tenure couldn't be any more dominant as he has made a dramatic rise to the heavyweight title picture since his debut against Fabricio Werdum at UFC 90. Dos Santos' striking is arguably the best in the division while possessing excellent technique and footwork. In his wins over Roy Nelson and Shane Carwin, "Cigano" utilized superior footwork and a strong jab to measure distance and move in and out of the pocket. Both Velasquez and dos Santos are undefeated inside the Octagon.
Velasquez is very good at implementing strikes with his takedowns, and on the ground is where he feels most comfortable. While he doesn't possess the same power and technique as dos Santos, he will not be hesitant to test his skills against the Brazilian. But dos Santos is unlike any other fighter that the champion has faced.
The 27-year-old dos Santos utilizes speed and distance very well, which allows him to set up his combinations. He also utilizes his hips very well as he puts in a lot of torque and power to fully extend his strikes. Look for dos Santos to constantly be moving around and measuring distance to setup his attack. Also, he won't be afraid to mix up his strikes with kicks and takedowns, evident in his bout with Carwin.
Watch for dos Santos to land hard, fast combinations on the champion, overwhelming him in the process, which will force Velasquez to go for a takedown. Dos Santos has underrated grappling ability and is successful at defending the takedown, which could frustrate his opponent.
Ultimately, dos Santos will overwhelm and frustrate the champion with his superior striking and grappling ability to force a stoppage in the third round.
Prediction: Dos Santos TKO 3rd round.
