Penn State Scandal: Why Nebraska Game Will Be Therapeutic for School

Since news broke about the alleged horrific actions of Jerry Sandusky, Penn State has seen its University Park campus become flooded with media vans, student riots and the firings of both Joe Paterno and the president of the university.

Win or lose, the Nebraska game today will provide the university with a few hours to focus on something other than the atrocities that were allegedly committed on their school grounds.

Some students wanted to see the whole football staff fired, while others are angry over how their head coach of 60 years was fired via phone call.

The media continues to be present throughout their campus, and there are questions as to who is next to be fired as far as the higher-ups at the school go.

"If you're not a Penn State student, then you have no idea how any of us feel," said Ryan Simon, a fellow Bleacher Report Featured Columnist and junior at the school.

It may seem odd to suggest that a simple football game would provide Penn State with relief, if not just for an afternoon.

It doesn't matter if the team goes out and gets routed by Nebraska today or they pull off an outstanding victory, because the game provides the university with something else to focus on, even cheer and feel happy about.

I've never been to the State College area, but just during broadcasts of the games and what has been reported in the media, this school clearly has no bigger sport than football.

Though this is just a game, it still allows Penn State to think about something other than the scandal and provide an entertaining distraction from what is sure to be a difficult rest of the school year and onwards.
