Will Floyd Mayweather show up at Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight?

Leo ReyesNov 11, 2011

WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. may show up at the Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to let boxing fans know he is serious about facing Manny Pacquiao on May 5 as announced earlier by his advisers.

Early last week, Mayweather's advisers, Al Haymon and Leonard Ellerbe, announced that the unbeaten champion will be returning to the ring on May 5, and they even said a reservation has been arranged, with the MGM Grand Garden Arena as the venue for the fight.

"We're looking to make the biggest fight possible and everyone knows what that fight is, the little fella," said Ellerbe.

Although they have not categorically named Pacquiao as Mayweather's opponent for this engagement, it was quite clear in Ellerbe's statement that he was referring to pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.

The announcement made by Mayweather through his advisers has generated tons of comments and reactions from boxing fans.

Many of these fans have dared Mayweather to show up in person at the venue of the Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight on Saturday night to demonstrate that he is indeed serious about facing Pacquiao.

His appearance will also dispel rumors he is scared of the "little fella" from the Philippines.

The long-delayed Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight is anticipated to break all boxing records—in terms of purses for the fighters and revenue generation—in what appears to be the richest fight in boxing history.

But because of the long and tedious negotiations over the last two years, boxing fans have given up hope that the fight would ever happen. Most say they won't bother talking about the fight until the contract is signed by both parties.

Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, said he is getting tired of Mayweather after years of failed talks.

"I do see Floyd as the only challenge left for Manny, but I'm getting kind of tired of Floyd, to be honest with you," Roach said. "Shut up and fight or not. He wants to make the rules, he wants to dictate everything. We'll fight him any day of the week, under Nevada state regulations. Who ... is he to try and make the rules?

The Pacquiao vs. Mayweather negotiations have fallen apart at least twice due to Mayweather's demand for Pacquiao to take an Olympic-style random drug test to make sure that he is clean.

One of the actions that boxing fans are anticipating, if Mayweather does show up during the Pacquiao vs. Marquez fight, is for him to call out Pacquiao and engage him in his usual trash talk or his popular "take the test" spiel, immediately after or during the post-fight conference.
