Pacquiao vs. Marquez III: Quiet Weigh-in Foreshadows Explosive Fight

Michael DixonNov 12, 2011

Friday's weigh-in between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez didn't feature much excitement. We didn't get the fireworks that are often seen at weigh-ins.

It's OK. See, when that happens, it's generally because the fight needs to be sold. Either one fighter is significantly better than the other, or neither of the two are likely to generate a lot of action.

Neither situation really applies here.

Pacquiao is certainly the better known fighter and deserved favorite. Still, can you really say that he's immensely better than Marquez?

After all, Marquez has taken him the full 12 rounds each of the two times they have fought. One of those fights ended in a draw, while the more recent fight was a split decision win for Pacquiao.

So, while Pacquiao's name carries much more value and recognition, can you really say that he's going to go out and dominate Marquez? No.

Conversely, you can't say that this will be a quick fight, or not worth the price of the buy.

These two men have a tremendous history of putting on great fights. Their first two fights weren't boring. Actually, they were action-packed thrillers.

So, even if this one ends early, what are the odds that we're not going to get a lot of action between the two men?

So, a quiet weigh-in is just fine by me. The action-packed ones always look so staged anyway. I would much rather that these two save their energy and bring everything they can to the ring on Saturday night.

If you need something to sell this fight to you, go back and watch their first two bouts. Even just watch some highlights of those fights.

The only important thing that came from the weigh-in is that both men made weight. That's all that needed to happen.

Their third fight will give all of the appeal that you would ever need.
