Jerry Sandusky: Recapping a Timeline of the Scandal

Unless you're living under a rock, you know what is going on at Penn State. Former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky is accused of allegedly molesting little boys for several years and legendary head coach Joe Paterno has been fired.

Although many know what happened, many don't know the time frame things took place. Here is a timeline to help you understand everything in chronological order. You can read the 23 page case here.

1996-98: Victim five in the report is taken to the locker rooms and showers at Penn State by Sandusky when he is eight to 10 years old.

Jan. 1, 1998: Victim four in the report is listed as a member of Sandusky's family for the 1998 Outback Bowl.

1998: Victim six in the report had been dropped off at home after showering with Sandusky.

1999: Sandusky retired from Penn State after being the defensive coordinator from 1977-1999.

2000: A boy known as victim three in the report meets Sandusky through The Second Mile when he is between seventh and eighth grade.

Late 2000: A janitor named James Calhoun witnesses Sandusky and victim eight in the showers as Sandusky is performing oral sex on the victim. Calhoun reports what he saw to other employees but a report is never filed.

March 1, 2002: Graduate assistant Mike McQueary witnesses Sandusky and victim two in the showers having anal intercourse. McQueary tells his father that day what he saw. 

March 2, 2002: McQueary goes to head coach Joe Paterno's house and tells Paterno what he saw.

March 3, 2002: Joe Paterno goes to athletic director Tim Curley and tells him what McQueary had told him.

March 2002: McQueary has a meeting with Tim Curely and vice president for finance and business Gary Schultz and he tells the two what he saw.

2005-2006: A boy known as victim one meets Sandusky through The Second Mile at age 11 or 12.

2007: Sandusky begins spending more and more time with victim one and even has the boy spend the night as his house in PA.

2008: Contact with victim one is stopped once he moves on to high school. The victim's mother calls the school to report a sexual assault and Sandusky is later barred from the school district.

2009: A teen boy tells authorities that Sandusky had touched him inappropriately over a span of four years. A investigation begins by the Pennsylvania attorney general.

2010: Sandusky retires from The Second Mile, which was a foster home dedicated to helping troubled children.

March 2011: The Patriot-News in PA reports that a grand jury is going to investigate Sandusky and the allegations that he molested a teen boy. 

November 5, 2011: Sandusky is arrested and later released on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on 40 criminal counts.

November 7, 2011: Tim Curely and Gary Schultz step down from their positions and admit that they didn't call the police when McQueary brought the allegations to their attention. They are charged as well.

November 8, 2011: Penn State cancels Joe Paterno's press conference as a ninth victim comes out and says Sandusky molested him as well.

November 9, 2011: Joe Paterno announces he will retire at the end of the season, but the board of trustees fires him later that day. Defensive coordinator Tom Bradely is named head coach of Penn State.

November 10, 2011: Penn State puts McQueary on administrative leave. Joe Patreno hires criminal defensive lawyer J. Sedgwick Sollers, although at this time he has not been charged with any crime.
