WWE To Release Best of "Saturday Night's Main Event" DVD Set

One of the benefits of WWE having such a huge library of content—both home-grown and acquired—is that they can put out a ton of DVD collections that even the most alienated fan would be interested in.

I've bought more sets and had more interest in buying sets in the past few years than I do actual PPVs, which isn't saying a lot about the current product.

That's why I was so excited to hear that WWE is releasing the Best of Saturday Night's Main Event, a three-disc compilation of the greatest matches and skits from the show that was a staple of my youth.

I remember the excitement of seeing the show listed in the TV Guide and prepared for the battle to stay up late to watch it. Thankfully, I usually got my wish and saw the exploits of Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Demolition, and the Honky Tonk Man live and in living color every few months. We didn't have cable, so it was all I had.

It's amazing that a show that had just 36 episodes over two decades made such an impact on so many. Maybe it was because it was an era before five-plus hours a week of wrestling on cable and this 90-minute glimpse was enough to satiate us between the four PPVs per year and the hourly syndicated shows on Saturdays.

Whatever it was, I'm very excited for this set to come out. I'm nostalgic like that.

In reviewing the list of matches below, the Hogan matches stick out the most, especially when he went against King Kong Bundy, Harley Race, Big Bossman and the Mr. Perfect/The Genius feud. In addition, Savage was a strong presence as well and his feuds with the Honky Tonk Man and Jake "The Snake" Roberts were perfect for the format.

With only three matches per show, you got the best of the best: no filler and no jobbers. Angles progressed and the matches usually paid off, even the unthinkable like when Andre The Giant and Ted DiBiase cooked up their scheme to steal the WWF Championship away from Hulk Hogan in 1988.
