20 of the Most Brutal Pitches in Recent Baseball Memory

Mark MillerNov 15, 2011

As we'll see here, the vast majority of embarrassing moments on the mound can be attributed to an ill-equipped person throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before a game.

Those moments aren't solely reserved for the pregame festivities, however, as a number of pitchers have balked, tripped and slipped their way through what should be routine pitches.

NOTE: Due to Major League Baseball's strict copyright policies I wasn't able to embed many of the videos, so be sure to click the links within the slides.

John Wall

1 of 20

With NBA players and owners in a dispute that certainly doesn't appear to be ending anytime soon, at least John Wall knows that he doesn't have what it takes to delve into a career in baseball.

Mike Pelfrey

2 of 20

A proper delivery is essential for any pitcher, but even professional ballplayers have the occasional slip-up, as New York Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey demonstrates.

Mark Mallory

3 of 20

Cincinnati mayor Mark Mallory demonstrates exactly how one shouldn't throw out an opening pitch.

Even the umpire felt the need to give him an honorary ejection for his effort...or lack thereof.

Carl Lewis

4 of 20

We already know Carl Lewis is a miserable singer, as evidenced by his poor performance of the National Anthem,

Apparently, he can't throw a baseball, either.

Randy Johnson Brushes John Kruk Back

5 of 20

I guess this was more of a "purpose pitch" as much as anything else. But the humorous move made for a priceless reaction from John Kruk and one of the easiest outs Randy Johnson could ever record.

Joan Steinbrenner

6 of 20

During the dedication of George M. Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees spring training facility, his wife Joan was given the honor of throwing out the first pitch to honor the occasion.

Tim Hudson

7 of 20

It's definitely funny when a pitcher goes down like Tim Hudson did as he tried to deliver this pitch.

But at the same time, you've got to breathe a sigh of relief when your ace laughs it off and doesn't end up injured.

Blue Man Group

8 of 20

I know a lot of people out there really like the Blue Man Group, and they've certainly entertained a great deal of fans throughout the years.

I just tend to think they're weird.

Mariah Carey

9 of 20

I doubt anyone in attendance really expected Mariah Carey to throw a decent pitch, making the outcome of this pitch very predictable.

But still terrible.

Commander in Chief

10 of 20

President Barack Obama drew jeers as he took the mound to throw out the first pitch on Opening Day for the Washington Nationals in 2009 wearing a Chicago White Sox cap.

He drew laughter when they saw him actually throw the ball.

Chad Qualls Trips off Mound

11 of 20

Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Chad Qualls did manage to get the ball to the plate, but his follow-through was less than stellar, as he'd ultimately end up on his backside.

Randy Johnson Blows Up a Bird

12 of 20

In a classic baseball moment, this bird really defines being the wrong place at the wrong time.

If only it was flying by the plate during a Tim Wakefield knuckleball, it might've ended differently.

Not How It's Done

13 of 20

I get that gripping a baseball too tightly before delivery can adversely change the trajectory of a pitch, but holding onto it too loosely has its consequences as well.

Is It Really That Hard to Intentionally Walk Someone?

14 of 20

I've never really understood how a pitcher can have so much trouble with an intentional walk.

I might be missing something here, but it seems like it should be the easiest job a pitcher would have.

Seriously, It Can't Be That Hard

15 of 20

As mentioned, it really shouldn't be that hard to complete an intentional walk.

I get that pitchers have their struggles from time to time and a pitch may not make it to the catcher as planned. But this many errant throws is just inexcusable.

I Know He's a Kid, but This Should NEVER Happen

16 of 20

Yes, he's a kid and undoubtedly still learning, but this is about as badly as an intentional walk could possibly end.

T-Rex

17 of 20

Ceremonial first pitches really need to be limited to humans.

Humans dressed as dinosaurs don't count.

A.J. Burnett Takes out Truck Window

18 of 20

During pregame warm-ups, pitcher A.J. Burnett showed he's prone to inaccuracy even before the game starts, as a wild pitch would sail towards the backstop just as a van carrying Billy the Marlin was driving by.

He later indicated that it may have been purposeful, saying he was sick of it driving by, but later reverted, saying it "slipped".

I remember seeing this on SportsCenter when it happened, and it's really too bad I couldn't find video out there for it.

Baba Booey

19 of 20

Radio personality Gary "Baba Booey" Dell'Abate had the honor of being able to throw out the first pitch of a Mets game in 2009.

While he would get a laugh or two, he certainly embarrassed himself as the pitch was errant enough to nail the umpire.

Lincecum Loses His Grip

20 of 20

Even the best pitchers in baseball aren't immune to the occasional screw-up.

Tim Lincecum's unintended eephus just didn't quite have enough to make it to the plate.
