Stanford vs. Oregon: Andrew Luck Can Win Heisman with Good Game vs. Ducks

Nicholas GossNov 11, 2011

Stanford Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck can win the Heisman Trophy with an impressive performance against the Oregon Ducks on Saturday night, when the two marquee teams in the Pac-12 conference battle in a matchup with BCS title implications.

Luck is the best quarterback in the country, and is almost a lock to be the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL draft in April.

Stanford is 9-0 and ranked third in the current AP poll and fourth in the BCS standings, and a win against No. 6 Oregon would give them a quality win to help their BCS ranking.

Luck has passed for 2,424 yards with 26 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He has shown the poise and composure that quarterbacks for BCS title contenders must possess.

He has been a top contender for the Heisman Trophy all season, but with Alabama running back Trent Richardson failing to have a monster game in a Crimson Tide defeat last week to No. 1 LSU, Luck has the chance to take a permanent lead in the race for the award.

In front of a nationally televised audience with no other big time game on at the same time, America will be watching Luck take on a very talented Oregon team which has not lost since Week 1 against LSU.

The Ducks haven't faced a quarterback or an offense as good as Stanford yet this season, and have a real test on their hands Saturday.

Not only does Luck have elite arm strength, he has great accuracy and doesn't get rattled when the pocket collapses.

When Luck feels the pocket collapsing, he has three NFL-caliber tight ends to pass to, and several fullbacks who will be open for short passes in the backfield.

Luck is fully capable of dominating the Ducks defense and keeping up Stanford's 48 points-per-game average.

Almost every previous Heisman Trophy winner had one signature game that really made them the clear choice for the award, and Luck has his perfect opportunity to impress the nation on Saturday night, and prove he is the most outstanding player in college football.
