NFL Power Rankings Week 10: Which Bottom Feeders Will Break Even?

Zachary D. RymerNov 10, 2011

In the NFL, there are some teams that are already doomed, and who won't be rescuing their seasons in the final eight weeks.

Teams like the Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins and St. Louis Rams come to mind. So do the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns. Pretty much any team with a sub-.500 record, really.

However, I actually think there is hope for a couple of teams. They've been lousy for the bulk of the season, but I think the three teams listed below are going to break even when all is said and done.

Washington Redskins (3-5)

I admit, it's hard to look much worse than the Redskins right now. They've lost four games in a row and their pathetic offense has largely overshadowed their defense, which is quite good.

Nevertheless, I'm optimistic. I like how Mike Shanahan finally started rookie Roy Helu at running back in Week 9, as he brought some much-needed energy to Washington's offense. If he can keep it up, the Redskins will have a dangerous weapon that they can utilize.

If they can start putting points on the board, the defense will take care of the rest. Remember, this team was 3-1 at one point, and I think a strong finish to complement their strong start is very much a possibility.

Philadelphia Eagles (3-5)

I know, I know. Yet another dingbat defending the Eagles' honor despite the fact it's overwhelmingly apparent that they suck.

Admittedly, I'm not proud of defending the Eagles, but I just can't accept that they aren't at least a .500 team. They're bad, but they're not bad enough to finish with a sub-.500 record.

Looking ahead, I count five winnable games on Philly's schedule. If they manage to win one more, they're going 8-8. It just depends on whether or not they get hot.

Shoot, they have to sooner or later, right?

Carolina Panthers (2-6)

If any bottom feeder out there can get hot, it's the Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers have been on the verge of getting hot virtually all season. Though they only have two wins, they've been competitive in all but a couple of their games. They merely need to learn how to finish.

That will be up to Cam Newton. And as I see it, finishing games is really the only thing he hasn't done yet. Because he's good enough to make it happen, it will.
