Mike McQueary: Wide Receivers Coach Should Be Banned from PSU Sidelines

Ryan RudnanskyNov 10, 2011

Let me ask you: If you heard a coach witnessed another coach sexually abusing a 10-year-old boy and did nothing about it, would you trust him with with your kids?

Penn State receivers coach Mike McQueary, who allegedly saw former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually abuse a boy in one of Penn State's locker room showers in 2002, apparently told head coach Joe Paterno about it, but did nothing when it was swept under the rug.

That is the biggest issue, that McQueary, along with Paterno and several members of the administration, turned a blind eye to a monster while he allegedly sexually abused at least eight boys in a period of 15 years while at Penn State.

The question for me isn't whether McQueary should be fired from Penn State (he definitely should), it's whether he should be allowed to coach college football ever again.

I believe McQueary should be banned from the sidelines for good.

Some may say McQueary made a mistake, that he should suffer the consequences but still be able to join the coaching ranks one day, but how can you conceivably ever trust a man who saw such an act with his own two eyes and let it pass? McQueary didn't just make one mistake—he made a mistake every day he allowed Sandusky's alleged actions to slide.

This isn't just about how deplorable McQueary's response was; it's about if he can be trusted around kids again.

I understand McQueary wasn't the actual perpetrator, but allowing the perpetrator to get away with such heinous acts is just as bad. It's a step below seeing a child get murdered and doing nothing about it.

McQueary, for now, hasn't been disciplined by Penn State.

But if Penn State lets him go, who's going to want him, anyway?

A university who hires McQueary is a university no one should want to be a part of.
