Carolina Panthers: Will Cam Newton Lead His Team to Playoffs?

The Carolina Panthers are 2-6. 

I didn't expect the Carolina Panthers to make it to the Super Bowl this year, but I did expect them to be competitive.

Cam Newton has been a revelation. The Panthers will not make the playoffs this year, but expect Cam Newton to lead the Panthers to the playoffs and beyond.

Cam Newton Will Get Even Better

Cam Newton is a rookie but he plays like a veteran. 

Newton has passed for 2,394 yards and 11 touchdowns. However, he still has some learning to do.

Expect him to be even better next season if he doesn't hit the dreaded "Sophomore Slump."

He Needs Another Wide Receiver

Steve Smith is really good, but he's not getting younger.

Greg Olsen has been Newton's security blanket while Jeremy Shockey has made a few plays. Honestly, it is not enough for the Panthers; they need that second legitimate down-field threat.

The running game is already established. If the defense can get their act together, too, you are looking at a playoff team.  

Can Ron Rivera Coach Him?

In his first eight games as a head coach, Ron Rivera has done a pretty decent job. 

If the Panthers want to get into the playoffs in the future, it all lies on the relationship between Rivera and Newton.

I'm not saying that their relationship is probably going to turn out like Terrell Owens/Donavan McNabb, but in this day and age anything is possible. 

Final Analysis

Lets face it: The Panthers will not make the playoffs this year. However, I can see them making the playoffs in the next few years.

With Drew Brees still good but not getting any younger, the balance of power will begin to shift in the NFC South, giving room for Cam Newton to lead the Panthers to the playoffs and—potentially—a Super Bowl.
