Pacquiao vs Marquez: Ridiculous Odds Make Pac-Man Impossible to Bet on

Kyle VassaloNov 8, 2011

Even if you think Pacquiao is going to rock Marquez and that the fight is grossly one-sided, the opportunity cost of betting on Pac-Man is far too great to make throwing down any money logical.

Pacquiao's odds are set at 11/1, according to Bodog. While betting on a heavy favorite seems like easy money, the downside is that you have to bet a lot to win a little.

At 11/1 odds, you would have to bet $1100 to make $100. While some will see it as an easy $100, let's not forget that Marquez gave Pacquiao everything he could handle the first two times the fighters met.

Pacquiao still has a distinct edge in this fight, but it isn't 11/1 lopsided. In fact, Marquez' 13/2 odds are more appealing to bet on. If you think there is even a small chance that Marquez walks away with a victory, a small bet could turn into quite the loot.

It's highly unlikely, but betting a little with the prospect of winning a lot is far more appealing than the alternative of betting a lot in order to win a little.

The gross discrepancy of the odds makes it impossible to feel confident betting on Pacquiao. Anyone who saw the first two fights knows that Pacquiao is going to have a huge battle on his hands.

Even though the fighters are at different stages of their career and Pacquiao is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Marquez is a veteran fighter who has experience being in the ring with Pac-Man.

An upset isn't out of the question here and Vegas' drastically lopsided handicapping of this fight could easily come back to bite them, and anyone who is drinking the "guaranteed victory" Kool-aid.
