Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Marquez Will Provide Blueprint for Floyd Mayweather

Juan Manuel Marquez is going to give Floyd Mayweather a ton of information on how to fight and possibly beat Manny Pacquiao if the two actually ever do step in the ring.

Marquez has only fought one other time at the welterweight level, back in 2009 when he took on Mayweather, but now he has to deal with a fighter who has a much different style in Pacquiao.

When asked about the differences he expected between Mayweather and Pacquiao, Marquez wasn’t hesitant to speak.

"The biggest difference, obviously, is that Mayweather doesn't come to fight," he told a small group of reporters at the MGM on Monday. "He's a defensive fighter, he's not going to give you anything." By contrast, "Pacquiao is a great fighter, a spectacular fighter who's coming for you. We're going to be ready for him, and if he makes a mistake, we're going to make him pay for it. The other guy wouldn't make a mistake. He wouldn't fight."

It seems like Marquez is going to take a page out of Mayweather’s book and will employ his style against Pacquiao.

How will it work?

It seems that even Bob Arum, the promoter for the fight, seems to think it could work in Marquez’s favor.

"It really comes down to the fact that the style of Marquez is such that it will always give Pacquiao trouble," Arum said. "Manny only knows one style, and that's to attack, and Marquez is probably the best counter-puncher in boxing today, and he gets aggressive off the counter-punching. That will still be there, and Marquez has great recuperative powers."

You damn well know Mayweather is going to be paying close attention to this fight and will see how Pac-Man’s new style matches up with Marquez’s plan to play ultra-defensive, much like "Money" Mayweather tends to do.

If it looks promising and Pacquiao wins narrowly in a split decision, I think we see the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao bout come to fruition very soon.
