WWE's Endless Series of Non-Title Matches Must End

Alex HallNov 7, 2011

Currently, the WWE has active titles, but you wouldn't have any idea that's the case if you watched the product.

The Divas Title constantly sees its No.1 contender decided by ridiculous battle royals, the latest being a Halloween edition, the United States, Intercontinental and Tag Team championships always seem to be scarcely defended against random opponents.

What happened to the days where the United States and Intercontinental titles showed off two of the best mid-card wrestlers on the roster? What happened to the days where the Tag Team division saw intriguing storylines like when Shawn Michaels and John Cena held the belts?

Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton are currently deadlocked in a great rivalry over on Friday Night Smackdown, but the Rhodes' Intercontinental title could add an interesting dynamic to the feud.

Sure, Orton is well above the "mid-card" level, but the title needs more than a makeover, it needs to become relevant again and if this rivalry becomes focused around it perhaps we see that belt revived like Rhodes keeps talking about.

Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne have basically just been tagging against random opponents, defending against Jack Swagger and US champion Dolph Ziggler at the previous pay-per-view.

The Tag Team division has already been downsized with the unification of the once WWE and World Tag Team titles a few years back, but the division still seems to have no direction.

The fact that the United States champion was battling for the Tag titles shows you how important Ziggler's time with the belt has been. Sure he defended against Zack Ryder recently in somewhat of a rivalry, but this storyline needs further development if WWE is trying to do something with these two.

This company went decades with captivating storylines for each of its divisions, it's time WWE got back to these ways and focused on each title so talent isn't wasted and championships don't lose their prestige.
