Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Will Superfight Outshine UFC on Fox?
This Saturday there is going to be an epic battle. I am not talking about Cain, Dos Santos, Pacquiao or Marquez. I am talking about the bout will be between boxing and MMA...and MMA is the clear favorite.
Forget what you thought you know about boxing and the UFC because the roles are finally reversed, with UFC the favorite to a failing sport that will have awful numbers on Saturday.
We are about to get a real-world experiment play out before our very eyes. If MMA was ever going to prove their mettle it would be this weekend. Boxing's golden boy Manny Pacquiao is fighting in the third of what has been a marvelous trilogy against Juan Manuel Marquez.
Fans will have to make a very real decision as they are forced to dole out hard-earned cash to watch this pay-per-view event.
At the same time, Dana White presents a marquee UFC match of his won. Cain Velasquez will take on Junior dos Santos in a title bout for Velasquez's belt. That epic fight can be seen free on Fox for any that want it.
It pains this boxing fan to no end to admit that the outcome is obvious. UFC will force boxing to tap out on Saturday. You would think that third meeting in a razor thin trilogy would garner a must-see tag being attributed to the event, but that just isn't true.
Fans are more savvy and cynical when it comes to boxing. After seeing Pacquiao dismiss of Shane Mosley with such ease and Floyd Mayweather's fight with Victor Ortiz ending in controversy, boxing fans are jaded.
With UFC you are almost guaranteed a well-fought match with two like talented masters of martial arts. Rarely do you come away thinking the fix was in.
I simply can't say the same for boxing and the ridiculous outcomes we have seen. To ask fans to pay for what they hope to be a good fight over one that is free is beyond brash.
I am not a betting man, but I know where I would place my wager. The time of UFC has finally arrived and we will see it play out this weekend.
By Sunday morning, fans will ask others is if they saw the fight. The answer will be an overwhelming affirmative as we will have all seen Velasquez and dos Santos brawl for free.
