Jerry Sandusky Sex Scandal: Why Penn State Will Still Be Highly Respected

There is simply no way to separate the deplorable actions of one and the inaction of a few from the namesake of Penn State. With time and a great deal of overhaul, Penn State will return to its honorable reputation. 

This weekend, the world found out about a dark secret that lived in the once hallowed halls of Penn State. This is a university living on the status of honor and prestige. Now it is being rocked to its foundation over some of the worst allegations a university can be hit with. 

Former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky is being charged with sexually abusing eight boys over 15 years through his charity for at-risk youth. Under the guise of goodwill, Sandusky was allegedly performing deplorable actions. 

That Joe Paterno found out and did little more than tell Vice President Gary Schultz and Athletic Director Tim Curley and not the police damns the legendary head coach. 

The fact that the two top Penn State officials did nothing with that information now makes them culpable. But the University will continue after deplorable human error. 

Before I continue, I have to say that the status of this program and the university it represents will never be the same for some individuals. Some will never be able to separate the crimes of one man and the looking away of others from the name of Penn State. 

But the Penn State name is already entrenched as a beacon for fans of college football. The name has already been established as a trustworthy source for high school recruits to aspire to. But first, the men have to go. 

The human element that sullied the proud name have to be fired or forced to resign. I am of course speaking to the one that remains in Joe Paterno. He has given up his right to represent this institution. 

Penn State may one day be referred to as an honorable university, but it will take time and effort from others. It can only commence once this scandal is addressed.

The next step is to clear the university of most of the stain, and that includes Joe Paterno.
