San Francisco Giants: Sanchez for Cabrera Is a Good Move, but Giants Can't Stop

Mike MoraitisNov 7, 2011

I must admit I was impressed to find out the San Francisco Giants traded away Jonathan Sanchez to the Kansas City Royals for Melky Cabrera.

Not much to lose here for the Giants taking a chance on Cabrera, who just had the best year of his career for Kansas City. Another instance of the Royals trading away a player worth something.

Sanchez has been very up and down in his career, but when he's on, he can shut down any team at their best. Problem is, Sanchez isn't at his best consistently enough, and it seems the Giants were tired of waiting.

Getting Cabrera in return is a great help for the Giants, who desperately need offense. Last year, Cabrera was at his best, hitting 18 home runs and 87 RBI while batting .305. He will add not only offense to the Giants, but will put a great arm in the outfield.

I'm not sure what this means for the chances of San Francisco re-signing Carlos Beltran, but I wouldn't depend on only Cabrera to give this offense a boost.

His sampling size just isn't enough, but one thing you can say in the positive aspect of this trade is that Cabrera had a good season at the plate with next to nothing in regards to protection in Kansas City's lineup last season.

Being that nobody saw this coming, the Giants might have more up their sleeves moving forward. The biggest question is will they open up their wallet for some of the bigger free agents (Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder), or will they go with a second-tier player (Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Beltran)?

One thing's for sure, it'll be tough to predict what San Fran will do the rest of the way.

Time will tell if the Giants will add another bat, namely a Carlos Beltran, but they will need another bat to compliment Cabrera. He is a start in the right direction, but if the Giants can add just a little more offense, they will be catapulted to the top of the list as far as World Series contenders are concerned.
