WWE PPV's: A Possible Change?

JDec 13, 2008

Just over a year and a half ago, WWE began including all three brands in every PPV. Up until that point some had been brand exclusive following the brand extension, but WWE decided to forget this idea and just include every brand as of Backlash 2007.

Some criticism has been aimed the WWEโ€™s way regarding PPVโ€™s recently, regarding almost no build up to some matches, and the thought that some PPVโ€™s should be cut altogether.

As money is tight in the WWE at the moment I canโ€™t see this happening, but I had a thought the other day that may solve both problems.

For as many PPVs as I can remember (since inclusion of all 3 brands) both the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships have been defended at every PPV.

Now I can understand why the WWE feel this is necessary, but does this have to be the case? In stead of cutting down on PPVโ€™s to make the ones we get seem more exciting, why not just limit the amount that the World Championships are defended at them?

Not only would this allow for bigger rivalries to develop but it would allow for other story lines being resolved at PPVโ€™s for wrestlers that could probably use the exposure.

This would also give the title matches that do happen a bigger buzz about them, and I think the fans would appreciate this a lot more.

It has also been apparent for a while that titles like the US and Intercontinental have been taking a back seat, and could be being held by bigger name wrestlers to restore a bit of prestige to their names.

It seems at the minute that some of the bigger wrestlers get pigeon holed into being a World Championship contender and not allowed to fight outside this bracket.

This kind of thing has lead to some bad rivalries over the past year (some may disagree but for example JBL and Cena's rivalry this summer), when some of these wrestlers could have been given a US or Intercontinental title shot.

A change like this may open other doors, for example there could be more title matches on Raw or Smackdown. Excluding the Batista vs. Jericho match recently, there have not been a lot of big title changes on the weekly shows.

Sure the tag titles might change hands occasionally, like Miz and Morrison winning the titles at a dark match last night, but what does that say about how WWE values the tag team division?

The World title matches rarely change hands outside a PPV, making the Raw and Smackdown title matches almost pointless.

Iโ€™m not saying that this solution could solve all of WWEโ€™s PPV problems, but it would at least make them less predictable and more enjoyable to watch.

I donโ€™t think all the World Championship matches have become predictable, but who would have bet against Cena winning at Survivor Series, and who can seriously see either title change hands at Armageddon after both changed at the previous PPV? I just think something needs to change.
