LSU vs Alabama: Historic Ratings Don't Mean There Should Be Title Game Rematch

Austin GreenNov 6, 2011

The LSU-Alabama matchup that was hyped as the "Game of the Century" drew historic ratings on Saturday, but that doesn't justify a rematch for the BCS championship.

The battle between No. 1 and No. 2 was the second highest rated regular season game ever on CBS, trailing only Notre Dame vs Miami in 1989.

CBS said on Sunday that the game drew an average overnight rating/share of 11.9/21.

I don't know what the hell that means, but I'm assuming it's impressive.

The game itself lived up to the hype, as long as you weren't expecting touchdowns. LSU ended up winning the field goal fest 9-6, a score that looked more like a minor league hockey game than a college football one.

Clearly, these are the two best defenses in the nation and there were plenty of interesting moments. From Alabama's four missed field goals, to the misadventures of Jarrett Lee, to Tyrann Mathieu's cheap shot on Dre Kirkpatrick, this certainly wasn't a boring affair.

But frankly, the country doesn't need to see LSU-Alabama Round 2.

The BCS system has made some awful picks before, but a rematch in the title game would be an absolute travesty.

If they remain undefeated, the Oklahoma State Cowboys should take on LSU in the championship game.

The Cowboys have the second highest scoring offense in the nation, putting up a ridiculous 50.1 points per game.

Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon form one of the deadliest passing combinations in college football. Weeden has already thrown for over 3,000 yards this season, and Blackmon leads the nation with 12 touchdown receptions.

If anybody can score on that vicious Tigers defense, it's Oklahoma State.

Should the Cowboys stumble, then Andrew Luck and Stanford deserve a shot at LSU. If Stanford falls, then let Kellen Moore and Boise State have a chance.

Nothing against Alabama, but they already had their chance to prove they were the best team in the country. And they blew it.

If there's any justice in college football, there will be no rematch in the BCS title game.
