BCS Rankings 2011: Georgia Bulldogs and 5 Teams That Were Screwed in the Polls

Jim SullivanNov 6, 2011

In the BCS, some teams are overrated and others are underrated. Then there are teams that are just plain screwed over. As a fan, you hate to see teams that deserve more credit get raided of their pride by a bunch of coaches and some media members.

As we are past the middle of the season, the BCS polls become increasingly important, especially to squads that are ranked in or around the top 10. With a few big time universities falling yesterday, the polls have shifted around a lot, and many were robbed.

Where teams end up now might be one of the last times they really move around, especially if they only face one or two more ranked opponents.

The Week 11 USA Today and AP polls are out. We'll take a look at which five teams got hit below the belt.

AP No. 23 Cincinnati

1 of 5

The Bearcats have been screwed in both the USA Today and the AP poll, where they rank No. 18 and No. 23, respectively. They lead the Big East and only have one loss early on to Tennessee.

Overall, Cincinnati deserves a little more respect in the polls. Their 7-1 record is impressive, even though they are in a weak conference. Big wins over South Florida, Pitt and Louisville prove they have the means to make a BCS Bowl.

Most one-loss teams are ranked much higher; Cincinnati deserves better than the bottom half of the polls.

USA No. 16 Georgia

2 of 5

The Bulldogs are, for some reason, all the way down at No. 16 in the Coaches' poll, while just slightly higher at No. 14 in the AP poll. They are currently on a seven-game winning streak after losing their first two and are receiving no credit from anyone for their record.

Everyone seemed to forget about Georgia after they lost to Boise State in the season opener and South Carolina the week following. However, a seven-game winning streak against five SEC teams and two non-conference squads is more than impressive.

With two ranked opponents left in Auburn and Georgia Tech, the Bulldogs still have a chance to prove they deserve to be higher in the polls.

USA and AP No. 12 Penn State

3 of 5

Penn State has one loss this season to the No. 4 team in the nation. Alabama beat them 27-11 in Week 2 at home, but since then the Nittany Lions have been perfect.

Joe Paterno should be proud of his team's seven-game winning streak and 8-1 record. Unfortunately, Penn State hasn't had the chance to play many ranked Big Ten teams so far this season, but next week provides a huge opportunity for them show what they are made of, as they take on Nebraska in Happy Valley.

After the Cornhuskers come to visit, the Nittany Lions finish the season against Ohio State and Wisconsin. With wins in all of those, watch for Penn State to finally get some respect.

USA and AP No. 8 Arkansas

4 of 5

The Razorbacks were No. 8 in both polls last week as well, so what's the problem? Over the weekend No. 9 South Carolina visited Fayetteville and Arkansas destroyed them 44-28.

How can they beat the No. 9 team and remain stagnant in the polls? It's ridiculous to see such a talented Arkansas squad fail to move up after an impressive win over another highly ranked SEC foe.

The Razorbacks deserve at least to move up above Oklahoma and possibly even Oregon, both of whom played weaker opponents this past weekend.

Watch for Arkansas to finish the season out strong against Tennessee and Mississippi State at home. The finale in Death Valley should be the determinant on who wins the SEC West. That is a game you don't want to miss.

USA and AP No. 5 Boise State

5 of 5

Boise State is a fantastic team and, honestly, they have always been a little screwed in the polls. I understand they've only really beaten Georgia, but it was a solid win in Atlanta. Additionally, the Broncos are undefeated and should at least jump up above Alabama.

Hopefully, the Broncos end up finally having a real tough SEC team test them in a BCS Bowl. The Sugar Bowl would be ideal against Alabama or Arkansas and would finally provide the right challenge for a team that truly deserves one.

With only four games left against easy opponents, expect Boise State to finish out the year easily and win the MWC.
