WWE Smackdown: Why It's the Best Show WWE Has and How It Can Be Better

Tyson JonesNov 6, 2011

Smackdown has been called the B-Show for WWE for many years now, and that claim is not unwarranted. Smackdown usually has a roster lacking in star-power as opposed to RAW, it's a taped show instead of live, and many times it's time is used for hyping up what happened on RAW. Sounds like B-Show material to me.

But over the past month or so, something has changed with Smackdown. Maybe it's the Supershow aspect, maybe everyone's just stepped up their game on the blue brand, or maybe RAW is just starting to drop the ball, but Smackdown has become a far more entertaining show as of late. For those of you wondering why I say this, let me explain.

Well, I see the WWE and it's current crop of stories and I see RAW has five feuds going on. Zack Ryder vs. Dolph Ziggler for the U.S. Title, CM Punk vs. Alberto Del Rio for the WWE Title, Beth vs. Eve for the Divas Title, The Conspiracy (HHH vs Kevin Nash), and of course, The Rock and John Cena vs. Awesome Truth, which will parlay into Cena vs. Rock.

Now, these aren't bad stories, it's just that it's hard to care about The Conspiracy at this point and and ADR vs. CM Punk has yet to really pull me in.

I'm split on Awesome Truth vs. Cena and Rock, but that's the only story I'm really into, aside from Zack vs. Dolph for the U.S. Title, and RAW hasn't really been developing the feud. (You ever think Ryder should start working along with WWE creative, cause he's showing he can do their job a lot better as of late...)

The Divas Title feud...I like Eve, but I'm not a Beth fan, and again, WWE hasn't really been building up this feud.

Then we have Smackdown and its story lines. We have Mark Henry vs Big Show, Randy Orton vs. Cody Rhodes, Christian vs. Sheamus, Epico/Hunico vs. Sin Cara, and Alicia Fox vs. Natalya. Along with these feuds, Wade Barrett seems to be getting a push as of late and may enter into a feud with Sheamus so there's something more to look to.

Now, on paper RAW may look like the better line-up of feuds and on paper it has the potential, but WWE has failed to live up to that.

That said, I find myself enjoying Smackdown even more. Mark Henry and Big Show is entertaining and I like where it's going, Orton and Rhodes always put on a great match, especially after this Friday, Christian/Barrett and Sheamus is looking really good for almost all parties involved, I'm a fan of Alicia and Natalya and those two are putting on decent, (if not quick) matches, and even Epico/Hunico and Sin Cara is getting interesting.

RAW is so focused on Punk and Del Rio and Truth and Cena that most of the card gets ignored for the most part, while on Smackdown we have something going on at just about every level of the card.

Even Daniel Bryan got to show up this week. RAW really has to learn how to multi-task and build up some of these other feuds. Zack Ryder is doing an awesome job hyping his own feud than WWE has.

So, with all that said, I feel WWE could do a few things to make itself better and that being a few simple additions to the roster. Nobody all that big at the moment, but just a few guys to help even out the roster.

John Morrison would be a good addition to the roster, as a move would not only help him get out from under the rubble of the RAW card, but also give him a chance to show why he can be a world champion like he did in his second run on Smackdown.

Curt Hawkins is currently teaming with Tyler Reks, and while not a bad team, I think a move to Smackdown and a team-up with Heath Slater upon his return would do well for two underrated guys in the company, and with Air Boom and the WWE Tag Titles perhaps being in jeopardy, it makes sense to bring up another team along with Hunico and Epico.

Jack Swagger is a former World Heavyweight Champion and one of the most gifted big men in recent memory, and I believe a return to the home of his first World Championship would be a great thing to help put the All-American American back on the track to success, (plus it would help Vickie to have a man on RAW and a man on Smackdown.)

Now these aren't earth-shattering changes, but interesting ones nonetheless and could really put Smackdown over the top with a new tag team and two new main-event caliber stars.

John Morrison and Jack Swagger are floundering on RAW at the moment with JoMo on a losing streak and Swagger being considered Zigglers' sidekick. Not a good position, but on the less star-powered Smackdown main-event scene, these two could shine.

Orton or Sheamus vs. Swagger would be pretty interesting and Morrison vs. Christian sounds/has been pretty good, and Morrison vs. Henry makes for an awesome underdog tale, not to mention the second coming of Wade Barrett's push.

Along with that, Curt and Slater could be an impressive tag team, in my opinion. Both are pretty good in the ring, Curt has the mic skills and both have a similar look. I think they could pull off a rocker-esque gimmick, (and no, not THE Rockers) plus, it makes a team I think could really help the Tag Team Division.

In the interest of fairness, I think Smackdown could do to part with Jinder Mahal, Daniel Bryan (who would be forced to give up his Briefcase, setting up a tournament for the MiTB case which would be pretty interesting to see with so many young guys who could use the case) and Ted DiBiase.

Even without those minor changes, I think Smackdown has proven itself to be a more enjoyable, more coherent, and more interesting show overall, but let me know what you think. Thanks for reading.
