Tony Romo and 4 NFL Players Who Have the Least Self-Confidence

Ryan AlfieriNov 6, 2011

Since the injury he suffered in his heroic comeback against the 49ers earlier in the season, Tony Romo has not looked like himself. The ball is not coming out with quite the same velocity as it usually does, and his inconsistent production sure is alarming.

After the constant media heckling about his epic collapses this season, including rumors that the coaching staff does not trust him in those situations, it has to have some kind of impact on Romo's confidence. If the Cowboys still want to make something of this season, Romo needs to get back to being the gutsy, gun-slinging quarterback he is.

Here are some other players that are suffering from a lack of confidence.

Kevin Kolb

The big question surrounding Kolb, when he was still with the Eagles, was whether he could survive in a system that was not Andy Reid's.

So far, the returns are not promising.

Kolb is struggling behind a terrible offensive line and looks shaken in the pocket. He is never comfortable; the Cardinals are not sustaining offense.

Even in their success against the Ravens in the first half, most of their points came from big plays—like Fitzgerald's long catch-and-run—as opposed to sustained drives.

Blaine Gabbert

2 of 4

So far, Blaine Gabbert is not living up to his bill as the best passer to come out of the draft.

He never stretches the field with his arm and looks at the rush as soon as it comes close. Gabbert is not just lacking confidence, he looks flat-out scared at times.

When you look at the successes of Cam Newton and Christian Ponder, you have to wonder if the Jaguars are beginning to regret investing in Gabbert.

Chris Johnson

Chris Johnson's recent struggles cannot quite be attributed to one thing. He is not running with power, he does not embrace contact or make people miss and too often he looks for the "home run."

To put it simply, Johnson is not running with any conviction.

Whether it was his holdout that caused him to fail to get into shape—and miss out on practicing the timing with his linemen—or whether the money got to his head, Johnson is now a liability on the field.

Josh Freeman

Something about Freeman is not right this season. Perhaps he has some kind of injury that we don't know about, but Freeman is not playing like a confident player.

He is not reading basic coverages and is making a lot of ill-advised throws. His accuracy is not where it needs to be.

Without a strong running game, Freeman cannot play well enough to win the game by himself, at least not right now.
