UFC 138: Mark Munoz Deserves Title Shot After Destroying Chris Leben
After absolutely dominating Chris Leben in UFC 138, Mark Munoz deserves a shot at Anderson Silva's middleweight title.
Munoz will likely have to wait a little while, as a Silva-Chael Sonnen rematch is currently in the works. Sonnen nearly beat Silva in their first match, then called him out after destroying Brian Stann.
Because of the tense relationship between Sonnen and Silva, a much more intriguing marketing campaign can be built around that matchup. That means that Munoz will likely have to wait for that fight to happen before he gets a title shot.
While I would love to see a Silva-Sonnen rematch, Munoz definitely deserves his chance right now.
He improved to 12-2 when Leben's corner stopped the fight after the second round. Leben had a massive cut near his eye and was bleeding profusely, the product of that vicious Munoz ground-and-pound.
Munoz has become famous for what he calls "Donkey Konging." The former NCAA wrestling champ uses his great grappling skills to drag his opponent to the ground, then unleashes a brutal flurry of elbows and hammerfists.
The biggest knock on Munoz coming into this bout was that he hadn't fought many elite fighters. After taking down Leben, that can no longer be said.
After his dominating win, Munoz proclaimed that he should get a shot at SIlva's crown.
"I paid my dues in this weight class and I think I deserve a title shot," Munoz said. "Anderson Silva is by far the best pound-for-pound fighter. I give him all the respect and honor, but I think I deserve a title shot right now."
I couldn't agree more with Munoz. Dana White, it's time to reward this man for his efforts.
