BCS Rankings: Fraudulent Nebraska Will Finally Be Ranked Accordingly

Richard LangfordNov 5, 2011

Nebraska was undeniably exposed for the mediocre team they are. They will now plummet down the rankings.

This exposure came by the hands of Northwestern.

The Wildcats silenced the rabid Nebraska fans by pulling off a 28-25 upset of Nebraska on Saturday.

The Upsetting Upset

Northwestern entered this game with a string of horrid defensive performances. On the season, they were allowing an average of 6.3 yards per play.

This included 4.6 yards allowed per carry. The run-happy Huskers should have been able to exploit this and they didn't. They ran for just 103 yards at 3.0 yards per carry.

Defensively, the Huskers have struggled all year, but the one area they have had success is in stopping teams' No. 1 receivers. CB Alfonzo Denard has been brilliant, but he couldn't help limit Wildcats No. 1 WR Jeremy Ebert.

Ebert had six catches for 147 yards and a touchdown.

Nebraska's Mediocrity

Losses like this were inevitable for Nebraska because they just aren't very good.

They have just one win over a ranked team in Michigan State, and their defense has struggled all season.

Coming into today they were allowing 5.1 yards per play. Keep in mind that these numbers include games against the offensively challenged teams like Chattanooga, Wyoming and Minnesota.

This poor defense is especially problematic for Nebraska as they don't have a passing game to balance out their run game, and that makes coming from behind almost impossible.

Taylor Martinez was actually very good in this game. He threw for 308 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. But Martinez has been erratic at best on the year. Before today he had eight passing touchdowns to seven interceptions.

What This Loss Means to Nebraska

Nebraska is now in a three-way tie for second in the Big Ten. They are 3-2 and just one game behind leaders Michigan State.

They are still very much alive in the conference race, but this team is way too flawed for those expectations to be realistic.

Also, their days as a top 10 team are over. Depending on what happens to teams behind them Nebraska could fall to the 20-25 range. And they will soon be out of the Top 25 all together.

Outlook

Nebraska's next two games are at Penn State and at Michigan. They are going to lose them both. They are not a complete enough team to win those games on the road.

Much like last year Nebraska will limp into a mid-level bowl game and get crushed once they get there.
