LSU vs. Alabama: Tweets About the Big Game
No. 1 LSU goes on the road to take on No. 2 Alabama to decide who the favorite really is to win the SEC title and stake the next SEC claim for the National Title. This is the kind of day that elevates college football to yet another level.
Certainly, the media has provided no shortage of coverage and analysis for the big game. I don't think I have to list web sites for you to know that ESPN, FoxSports, CBSports and virtually anyone with a stake in the college football dynasty have had a lot to say about the Tigers and the Tide squaring off in Tuscaloosa.
However, this is the new age of sports entertainment. We don't need no stinking analysis from the "pros" to enjoy this game. We can get R kicks from Twitter don't U no?
The message boards have been alight for quite a while now.
Here are some of the better tweets out there giving us all kinds of insight into the biggest showdown to date in the world of college football.
Nice Comparison
1 of 11"Kentucky & Ole Miss squaring off, have lost a combined 16 SEC games in a row. This is basically the Alabama/LSU game for dyslexic people."
Thanks @NotJerryTipton for a little humor.
The game inevitably draws out certain comparisons. Sometimes they're comparisons between other big games going on around the country.
As big as LSU/Alabama is, Kentucky/Ole Miss is the opposite. That game showcases two of the most troubled teams in the mighty SEC and draws about as much attention as a skunk in stinky sock factory.
Gutsy Prediction
2 of 11"I'm saying it now...Alabama 31 - LSU 16" @kayone4
I respect a person who can go out on a limb to the whole world and predict the final score. It's easy to say "I think Bama will win" or "I think LSU will win." It's something entirely different to predict the final score and put it out there to the entire Twitterverse.
The upside @kayone4 is that, if you're right, you're a freaking genius. However, if LSU wins and wins big, your tweet is now out there for everyone to poke fun at.
Gutsy call, but I like it.
Shaq Makes the Call
3 of 11"It's on tomorrow nite baby Lsu 24 Alabama 17. What's your prediction" @SHAQ
The big man makes the big call. Shaq likes LSU over the Crimson Tide by seven.
Not a bad call in my mind. This should be a very close game between two teams with tough defenses. It could easily go either way and seven points is a decent spread to take on it.
The big question for the big man would be, can LSU's offense really hang 24 on the Crimson Tide defense? I'm not so sure. The Tide average only 6.9 points per game allowed. Asking for 24 out of the Tigers might be a little generous in the Tigers' favor.
While LSU has been impressive this year, it's been their defense that has shined the brightest. Their offense has been effective, but haven't really faced as complete a team as Alabama appears to be.
We'll see if Shaq is as good with college football predictions as he was at dunking the ball.
Some Love and Advice
4 of 11"The campus is wild right now for real. Love my team and our fans! Amped up for this game #Bama #RollTide"
Trent Richardson (@TrentR3) is showing a little love for his peeps. No doubt, Tuscaloosa is rocking with anticipation of this showdown.
"You only get a few moments in life to do something great #RiseUp"
Words to live by. Now, can his mojo work against a stiff LSU defense that allows just 76.63 yards per game rushing?
Richardson may well be the key to this entire game for the Crimson Tide. If he can get the wheels rolling, Bama's offense will open up and allow A.J. McCarron to work on the pass attack. If he falters, McCarron could find the going rough as the Tiger defense starts dropping more defenders back against the pass and pushes for more pressure into the backfield.
Great Day to Be a Tiger?
5 of 11"It's here! Great day to be a tiger!" LSU receiver Rueben Randle (@thebigrubino2)
No doubt, the players for both squads have been anticipating this day for quite a while. Both teams had a bye week leading into this game, so they haven't had the distractions of preparing for other opponents for two full weeks now.
It's been all about this showdown.
Now it's finally here and LSU's top receiver Rueben Randle is psyched about the big game.
Randle has 33 catches for 638 yards and 7 touchdowns. How big a difference can he be against a defense that allows 135.6 yards per game through the air and has given up just four passing touchdowns while taking away nine interceptions?
Bringing the Warrior Mentality
6 of 11"According to Chris Fowler, Nick Saban had the team watch 'Gladiator' last night to help hone the "warrior mentality.'" (@rollbamaroll)
Of course, you can believe everything you read on Twitter. I mean, why would a bunch of people with complete anonymity lie?
I don't know about Saban having the team watch Russell Crowe beat down on stunt doubles, but you can bet that he'll have his team ready to "roll" by kickoff. There hasn't been a bigger game for the Tide this season and won't be a bigger one until the Championship Game.
Still...good movie and if you want to psych up your players, you could do far worse. Heck, if it wasn't for the big game being on, I just might fire up the DVD myself...
Lasorda Love for Bama
7 of 11"A message to my boy Nick Saban: I'll be pulling for you and @AlabamaFTBL every play on Saturday. Good luck and Roll Tide." Tommy Lasorda (@tommylasorda)
The great Tommy Lasorda took a moment to send a message to his "boy" Nick Saban and showed some love for the Tide. It's always good to get a little celebrity attention and Tommy knows all about big games.
Lasorda won two World Series championships, four National League pennants and eight division titles as manager of the Kansas City Dodgers.
Jefferson's Ambition
8 of 11"Ambition is a way of life. It's a mind set. #myambition" (@jjefferson9)
LSU QB Jordan Jefferson didn't have a lot to say about the game today. I'd imagine his mind has been on things other than Twitter. I know mine would be.
Still, he took the time this morning to tweet about ambition.
I wonder what his ambition is, exactly? I'm guessing it's a way of life. I suppose it could be his mind set.
Ambition for what? Touchdowns? Do we have a number in mind here? A big win maybe?
If I had to guess, I'd say his ambition is to get into the big game. He's only played in four games this season and hasn't had a ton of opportunity to showcase his talents. Jarrett Lee has been the man taking the majority of the snaps under center for the Tigers.
That likely won't change tonight, though Jefferson adds a wrinkle to the offense that could make a big difference against this tough Alabama defense.
Good to see he's drawing some quiet motivation for the big game. He's apparently not one for a lot of words, though.
Missing Keith Jackson
9 of 11"The only thing that could make the LSU-Alabama game better would be if Keith Jackson was going to be calling the game." (@cpsands023)
I couldn't agree more. I know a lot of people who didn't care much for Jackson when he was the big college football color commentator of Saturdays. I can't honestly say that I thought much about his iconic voice and slow Southern style while he was still actively working for ABC.
Now that he's no longer calling out "whoa Nellie" through my television screen though, I admit that I miss him. He would make this game feel the way Saturdays used to feel and add that final touch to an already exciting confrontation.
We miss you Keith.
Beared Tiger
10 of 11"Reason #1 why LSU beats Bama: I'm returning the opening kickoff. @CollegeGameDay http://twitpic.com/7b4n26"
That's just awesome! If San Francisco Giants' Brian Wilson (@brianwilson38) came out looking like that, LSU just might win. Alabama would be so befuddled over that giant beard running at them, they might just die laughing before they got a chance to tackle him.
Wilson also had several other tweets giving reasons why LSU will beat Alabama. Another good one is:
"Reason zweimillionste why LSU beats Bama: If Forrest Gump went to LSU the movie would still be winning Oscars http://twitpic.com/7ag9zt
The twitpic shows Wilson super imposed over Tom Hanks during the segment where Forest Gump is running across America. Good stuff Brian! I'm now a Brian Wilson fan, even if I don't much care for the Giants.
Rapture Time?
11 of 11"BREAKING: Harold Camping announces he miscalculated the Rapture; it will happen during the LSU-Alabama game. Sports media is like, 'Duh.'" (@brendanloy)
Dang! And I'm not wearing clean underwear. Mom was right.
You have to love an opportunity to poke some fun at someone else's expense. Yeah, this game is big. Not quite that big, but...duh.
