2011 Breeders' Cup Results: John Velazquez Will Continue to Dominate in Day 2

Justin WeltonNov 5, 2011

John Velazquez has a successful first day at the 2011 Breeders’ Cup. He won the Juvenile Turf Sprint with Stephanie’s Kitten and the Filly and Mare Turf with Perfect Shirl.

Combine those victories with a third-place finish, and his day was great. He won $1.7 million for his unbelievable day.

About $2 million for one race day—I would take that paycheck.

But he isn’t done quite yet. There is more business that lies ahead for the experienced jockey.

Velazquez has three opportunities to snatch victories on Saturday. He is entered in the Trappe Shot (Sprint) and Finale (Juvenile Turf) before the big one, Classic, with Uncle Mo.

Uncle Mo hasn’t raced for a while because of a “mystery illness” that couldn’t be diagnosed. The three-year-old is back and is apparently better than ever.

Owner Mike Repole likes Uncle Mo’s chances, “I think there’s some irony that this race is in Kentucky. I think it’s special. If you would have told me I can pick a place after everything we’ve gone through this year where I’d want this race, it would be right here. So I think there’s some meaning that this race is here. He missed his Kentucky Derby. You can only be a three-year-old on the first Saturday in May one time in your life, and sometimes you’re not right on that day and unfortunately he wasn’t, but he’s got another shot.”

At 3-to-1 odds, Uncle Mo is the favorite to win the race. 11 horses will all be vying for the $5 million grand prize.

Let the best horse win.
