2011 Breeders Cup Results: Friday Race Winners and Recap
The 2011 Breeders' Cup got off to a rousing start on Friday with six scintillating races to sort out the best from the rest in the wide world of horse racing.
The day was bookended by victories for legendary trainers. Bob Baffert's Secret Circle in the Juvenile Sprint to open up the event and Bill Mott's Royal Delta in the Ladies' Classic to close out the evening.
European horses, touted as big threats to make noise coming in, were left out of the winner's circle entirely on Friday, with entries from Saudi Arabia and Canada accounting for the only international victories on the day. The excitement continues on Saturday, with all eyes firmly fixed on the $5 million Classic to cap off two days of thrilling equine competition.

Secret Circle was an overwhelming favorite to win the Juvenile Sprint, coming into the race with 2-to-5 odds. The colt got off to a blazing start before slowing a bit down the stretch, though he was still able come out ahead.

Stephanie's Kitten pulled off one of the more exciting upsets of the day by chasing down pacesetter Stopshoppingmaria win the JF Turf. The homebred filly pulled ahead down the stretch and sped across the finish line by three-quarters of a length.

Musical Romance, a 20-to-1 longshot, came out ahead in the F&M by way of a furious rally on the inside in the stretch. The win, which came by 1 1/4 lengths, was just the ninth in 33 tries for the four-year-old filly.

The JF went according to plan, with favorite My Miss Aurelia winning the race by a comfortable three lengths. The victory was the fourth in as many tries for the two-year-old filly out of Stonestreet Stable.

Perfect Shirl pulled off the biggest upset of the day, winning the F&M Turf as a 27-to-1 long shot. The Canadian shipper came out ahead in what turned out to be a thrilling finish in the one-and-three-eighths-miles race.

What better way to follow up a monumental upset than with the favorite, Royal Delta, coming out ahead in the Ladies' Classic to finish off the evening.
The three-year-old filly, which came in with a slight edge over Bob Baffert's Plum Pretty, rode furiously in the final furlong to win by two-and-a-half lengths and give Bill Mott his fourth career victory in the Ladies' Classic.
