WWE: 7 Reasons Air Boom Is Reinvigorating the Prestigious Tag Team Division
Happy Friday Night SmackDown everyone.
Some of you are like me, fans of the WWE for years and years who have been around when the tag team division was a large battlefield filled with incredible athletes taking it to each other week after week.
We've had legends like Demolition, the Road Warriors and Edge and Christian to name a few who made history and left us wanting more after each match.
Then, it happened.
The WWE decided to let it fall from grace and waste away. Not only that, the precious legacy that was the original Tag Team championship had been sealed off last year as the belts were retired. What was to happen to all those moments we shared in the 80s, 90s and 00s?
As they all became engraved in our minds, we called out for heroes who would bring about the rightful restoration of the division and usher in a new era.
Those heroes have come. Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston, singles stars in their own right have banded together and formed the high-flying duo Air Boom and has since captured the WWE Tag Team titles.
Nevermind Bourne's temporary suspension, the team is what we needed all along and their fire will not be extinguished so easily.
Here is how this tandem simply breathed life back into a dying division.
Air Boom Went Back to Basics
1 of 8The tag team basics...
- A name for the team
- An entrance music
- Matching or similar colored outfits
- A tag team finisher
These are important rules to follow if you wish to function as a unit. Air Boom has managed to get the list right and so we, the WWE Universe, have come to believe in them and their pairing.
Remember when Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre became the tag team champions? What in the world was that? Why did they come together and above all, take the titles off of the Hart Dynasty who was a far better duo?
We never believed in that collaboration, and so, it ended along with their short reign.
Drew McIntyre and Sheamus...now that's a team!...WWE'12!
We Get To See Evan
2 of 8It is good to see his awesome abilities put to use in a good way.
I always felt he had his place in WWE, but without a cruiserweight division, it was hard to imagine him actually finding a place amongst the Cenas, Ortons and Mizes.
When you play games like SmackDown vs. Raw for example, you get to pick and mix characters and I had him in a team with Justin Gabriel named "Angels and Airwaves." Yes, same as the punk band. They fit perfectly together, but I never imagined how good he and Kofi could be until I witnessed it with my own eyes.
His recent suspension is a minor setback. The team "Air Boom" is on a roll, and people love watching Evan's fantastic Shooting Star Press so I wouldn't count on the head cheese stripping them of the titles.
Thirty days passes very fast, and there was a time when the championships weren't defended for months at a time.
If WWE screws this up, there may be no turning back.
Kofi Kingston Has a Chance To Shine Again
3 of 8In 2009-10, everyone was convinced this Superstar was going to main event pay-per-views. He got an incredible push, and for a few reasons, it was cancelled and we saw him return to the mid-card for a while longer.
I was never really a big fan of him to be honest. I would have never chosen him over the likes of The Miz, Cody Rhodes or Sheamus, but I didn't want him to be thrown away either.
Kofi Kingston is a phenomenal athlete and is a former United States and Intercontinental Champion in his own right, yet something was missing.
Did we really "feel" his character all this time? Was he really ready to shine on top of the mountain? Now, there is no denying he has the means to impress us and win our hearts forever. All he has to do is join the ranks of great tag team specialists like Shawn, Bret, Jeff and Edge, and the rest will write itself.
This is it for him. His moment may have come, and he already has taken the bull by the horns.
Now, he has to ride to the top.
The Two Mesh Well Together
4 of 8It's no secret, Kofi and Evan together as Air Boom is hot, hot, hot!
They can read each other's mind and follow each other's moves to excellence (there is no such thing as perfection) which makes us, the fans, go ooh! ahh! oh! That is what we need to see right now, in the tag team division and the WWE as a whole.
It won't be the same if Bourne is replaced. Again, 30 days passes so quickly there is no real need to do that.
Let Air Boom soar higher that it's already been. Pas touche!
WWE Has To Be Creative and Give Them Worthy Opponents
5 of 8The pairing of Kingston and Bourne was a genius idea. Their last opponents, Ziggler and Swagger can also be great...we just need time to work it out in our heads.
Dolph is also the United States champion, and that brings a whole other dynamic to the game as well as Vickie Guerrero being "Swaggler's" manager. She is an instant heat magnet and can do wonders for their characters.
No one knows how long this will last, but it certainly makes use of great Superstars week after week.
The WWE cannot reinvent the wheel, but it does have to step up its game and give us and the tag team champions credible opponents.
It's just too bad some former Stars were let go while being in good teams. I think of David Hart Smith, Shad Gaspard and Carlito Colòn for example. There could have been great matches with already established teams with enough experience to give us a superb show.
Let's just hope the Usos can stay together and make an impact.
Some Leftover Superstars Could Have Something To Do
6 of 8Reviving the tag team division is a solution to the eternal problem of: what can I do with all these guys I would never use anywhere else.
Take the Tyler Reks/Curt Hawkins pairing. Both guys floated in the sea of oblivion up until now, and for the life of me I would have dropped them instead of Gail Kim and Melina but wait! We just got ourselves a new team.
From what I hear, they are pretty good together and based on this picture, look similar...in a way so why not?
As of right now, there aren't that many teams to begin with which means we have to start somewhere. Since Drew McIntyre and Sheamus won't happen yet, maybe find something for John Morrison to do in order to get his MoJo back.
Return Joey Mercury from FCW (he is a trainer there), place him with Morrison as heels and declare the return of MNM minus the "M" of Melina.
Those are just a few ideas. What team do YOU see coming together. Comment box me!
The Fans Got What They Wished for
7 of 8How many months have I read here or other places how the WWE Universe misses a great tag team match, how there are no more teams and the division has fallen into shadow?
You must admit now the corporate heads over there in Stamford have heard our prayers and did what needed to be done. They go quite slow I must say but bringing in Air Boom was a giant step in the right direction.
There is so much history in this division much like the women's, and it cannot be taken for granted. Therefore, it is in everyone's interest to keep it alive, thriving and well-stocked.
WrestleMania XXVIII: TLC match for the tag team titles.
Air Boom (c) vs. The Usos vs. MNM (should Mercury and Morrison reunite...just an idea)
Wouldn't you want to see something like that? I would.
Let's Hope This Trend Spreads to Other Areas
8 of 8By using Air Boom to reinvigorate the tag team division, WWE has begun to heal the cancer that had been eating away at them for years.
If successful, perhaps it would be time to move on to another problem: the Divas. That also has seen its share of repair in recent months with the Sisters of Destruction/Divas of Doom arc. I would do things a little different but no matter...they addressed the problem. It's good enough for now.
One by one, the divisions of the company must be repaired in hopes that one day all can be as it was or at least, evolve into a future self that is worthy of its past.
Not even the WWE championship picture is spared as it clearly became a joke in the last months.
The key here is to keep at it. Ask and we shall receive.
The rebirth of the tag team division is at hand, and AIR BOOM is the way.
