19 Biggest Winners and Losers from NFL Week 9

David LevinNov 6, 2011

If Week 9 in the NFL taught us anything, it's that anything can happen to any team.

Green Bay fighting it out with San Diego to remain undefeated.

Miami solidly beating Kansas City to earn their first win of the season.

The Indianapolis Colts are still in the hunt to replace that Manning guy.

And of course, there were other winners and losers to help shed light or further clutter the playoff picture in both the AFC and NFC.

Yes, it was a wild weekend and could be even wilder when Chicago and Philadelphia tangle tonight. You know Philadelphia always seems to pull off a great performance or two in night games. We will hold our breath and wait.

But for now, here are winners and losers from Week 9.

Winner: Tim Tebow, Denver Broncos

1 of 19

We can start off with Tebow and get it over with.

He was not overly effective as a passer, completing only 10-of-21 passes. But he did throw for two touchdowns.

He was effective on the ground, running for 118 yards and two scores.

He helped his team defeat division rival Oakland 38-24 and earned another week under center.

Loser: Indianapolis Colts

2 of 19

While Miami was getting themselves off the carpet with a win, the Colts were doing just the opposite.

The 31-7 loss at the hands of Atlanta yesterday did little to squelch the rumors that Jim Caldwell may be out as head coach at the end of the season or sooner.

It also continued the speculation that Andrew Luck will be selected to eventually replace Peyton Manning, whether that is sooner or later in the Colts' future.

Winner: The Miami Dolphins

3 of 19

They finally got into the win column with a 31-3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Running Back Reggie Bush ran for 92 yards and a score. Quarterback Matt Moore threw for 244 yards and three scores.

And more importantly, head coach Tony Sparano finally got a win this season.

The Dolphins have played better of late. Winning a game was only a matter of time.

Loser: Buffalo Bills

4 of 19

Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Buffalo Bills looked pedestrian in a 27-11 loss to the Jets.

The Jets' defense helped guarantee the win when Fred Jackson was stopped in the third quarter from the 1-yard line.

The loss dropped the Bills, 5-3, into a tie for first place with the Jets and Patriots.

Winner: DeMarco Murray, Dallas Cowboys

5 of 19

Murray ran for 139 yards on the day and helped combine with Tony Romo's 279 yards passing with two touchdowns in the 23-13 win over Seattle.

The Cowboys seemed to find the switch to their offense in the second half after going into the third quarter tied with the Seahawks at 6-6.

Loser: Tom Brady, New England

6 of 19

The quarterback of the Patriots was betrayed by his defense again.

Brady threw for 349 yards and two scores in the 24-20 loss to the Giants.

Wes Welker and Rob Gronkowski had 237 yards in receiving combined.

It just proves the Patriots have huge holes in its defense, and New England will have to outscore their opponents to advance far in the AFC playoffs, like the 1984 Miami Dolphins.

Winner: Eli Manning, New York Giants

7 of 19

Manning threw a one-yard touchdown to Jake Ballard with 15 seconds left in the game to defeat the Patriots 24-20.

Manning threw for 250 yards and two scores in the win.

The two teams combined for 31 points in the fourth quarter, alone.

Loser: Kansas City Chiefs

8 of 19

Just when you thought the Kansas City Chiefs had righted the ship, they go out and get buried by the Miami Dolphins.

Losses happen in the NFL, but the Chiefs had won four games in a row before the loss after dropping the first three games of the season.

Could this lead to another losing streak for the Chiefs, and could this also springboard Miami into a winning streak?

Winner: Arian Foster/Ben Tate, Houston Texans

9 of 19

The running back tandem again proved they are a pretty good force and helped the Texans to a 30-12 win over Cleveland.

They were successful in the win over Jacksonville last week and kept right on rolling this week.

While Matt Schaub only threw for 119 yards, the running game was the most effective part of the game and helped Houston, 6-3, to remain atop the AFC South.

Loser: Chris Johnson, Tennessee Titans

10 of 19

The "playmaking" runner for the Titans still has not broken out of his offseason funk.

Johnson ran for only 64 yards in the 24-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

While the Titans were picked as a possible surprise team in the AFC this season, they continued to look flat while the Bengals looked poised to challenge the best in the AFC for supremacy.

Winner: Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers

11 of 19

Both Rodgers and the Packers are riding the Super Bowl wave and don't look to get out of the deep end any time soon.

Rodgers threw for four touchdowns in the 45-38 win over the Chargers.

The Packers defense scored on two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns. First by Tramon Williams and the last by Charlie Peprah to seal the win.

Green Bay is still undefeated.

Loser: Seattle Seahawks

12 of 19

Somehow, this team needs to find a way to win.

The Seahawks, despite 135 yards rushing from Marshawn Lynch and 231 yards passing by Tavares Jackson, lost to the Cowboys 23-13.

The loss gives the Seahawks a 2-6 record on the season.

Winner: Mark Sanchez, New York Jets

13 of 19

The Jets quarterback played an efficient game, completing 20-of-28 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown in the 27-11 win over the Buffalo Bills.

The Jets, fresh off a bye week, made things a little more difficult in the AFC East, joining Buffalo and New England with a 5-3 record.

Loser: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

14 of 19

The Bucs could have made a statement today by beating the Saints twice this season, but they could not stop New Orleans.

Despite the return of LeGarrett Blount, who ran for 72 yards, the Saints were able to use their own ground game, led by Pierre Thomas and Cory Ivory to seal the win.

Winner: Jim Harbaugh, San Francisco 49ers

15 of 19

7-1 under Jim Harbaugh.

The first-year head coach really knows what he's doing.

The 49ers are in control of their own destiny and could wrap up their division before any other team in the NFL, maybe by Thanksgiving.

I guess Harbaugh has taken his success as a player and college coach and translated it into a winning formula on the Bay.

Loser: John Beck and Mike Shanahan, Washington Redskins

16 of 19

Oh, the sharks are circling the tank.

The Redskins have lost four straight games with the 19-11 loss at the hands of the 49ers.

While Beck threw for 254 yards, it was not enough to offset a lack of offense by Washington.

Winner: Cincinnati Bengals

17 of 19

Andy Dalton and the Bengals are REAL.

What would happen if the Bengals and the 49ers met in the Super Bowl?

Dalton and the Bengals offense engineered a come from behind win over the Tennessee Titans. He threw three touchdowns, and his team rallied from being 17 points behind at one point.

The Bengals are currently 6-2.

Losers: Pittsburgh Steelers

18 of 19

It looked like the Steelers would pull this out and come back to beat the Ravens.

The offense took control in the second half after being down 16-6 in the third quarter, with Ben Roethlisberger leading the team to a 20-16 lead.

But the Ravens had the last say and the last laugh when Joe Flacco proved to be a hero after a sack and fumble in the fourth quarter looked like it would be the end of the Ravens.

The Steelers could not contain the Ravens' offense which led to the game-winning drive in the final seconds of the game.

Winner: Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints

19 of 19

Brees proved last week was not one of his best games, and he could make amends for it at the hands of the Buccaneers.

Brees threw for 258 yards and two touchdowns in the 27-16 win. His performance helped to make up for the loss to St. Louis last week, giving the Rams their first win of the year.
