New York Yankees Non-Tender News

Bronx Baseball DailyDec 12, 2008

The Yankees took the two biggest free agents off the market this week and decided to be generous by offering two of them back.

Pitcher Chris Britton and outfielder Justin Christian were non-tendered today, and they are now free agents looking for work.

Britton appeared in just 15 games for the Yankees in 2008. In 23 innings, he had a 5.09 ERA with a 1.70 WHIP. The Yankees got Britton in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Jaret Wright.

After a successful year with the Orioles in 2006, posting a 3.35 ERA in 53.2 innings, the Yankees used him just for just 12.2 innings in 2007. That caused many Yankees fans to criticize the front office and coaching staff for not using Britton in the majors more often.

But it turned out the guy who could hit up to 95 mph for the Birds topped out at 89-90 mph with the Yankees. He was pretty much been passed over by a lot of more talented young relievers in the Bombers system.

It was a little bit more surprising that Christian was let go. He did not hit much for the Yankees, with only a .302 OBP in just 24 games, but he showed some very good speed and defense. He also provided pretty good versatility, as he played all three outfield positions and also second base.

Former Yankee Scott Proctor was also non-tendered by the Dodgers today.

Proctor had a bad year last season, with a 6.05 and a 1.68 WHIP in 38.2 innings.

It would make little sense for the Yankees to re-sign Proctor, but it is possible they could offer him a contract. I do not see why.
