San Fransisco 49ers' Vernon Davis Needs More Touches Against Redskins

Jesse ReedNov 3, 2011

Vernon Davis hasn't been targeted much these days. There have been justifiable reasons for this, but he needs more touches against the Redskins and their slow linebackers.

Now that Braylon Edwards is healthy and back in action, the San Francisco 49ers finally have their full arsenal available to attack their opposition.

Along with Michael Crabtree, who is starting to emerge as the kind of playmaker we hoped he'd be when we drafted him, the 49ers can stretch the field vertically and challenge the safeties.

The Washington Redskins are supremely talented at the aforementioned safety spot. LaRon Landry and O.J. Atogwe are both fast, physical players who can also play the ball fairly well.

If the 49ers hope to develop a strong passing attack against them, they must utilize their All-Pro tight end, Vernon Davis, to open up the middle of the field.

While certainly not shabby, the Redskins linebackers aren't what you would call fast. Their front seven is built a lot like the 49ers, with one exception. They don't have NaVorrow Bowman and Patrick WIllis.

Greg Roman should exploit this weakness by allowing Davis to be more involved in the passing game. Seam routes will either cause the safeties to play more in the middle of the field, leaving the sidelines available for one on one with Crabtree and Edwards.

Or it will cause the safeties to leave the middle, in which case Vernon would blow by the slow linebackers and get open behind them.

Lord knows he's done everything else required of him, but I think it's time to get Davis more touches against the Redskins on Sunday.
