Pacquiao vs. Marquez: Juan Manuel Marquez's Talk Will Destroy Him vs. Pacquiao

Adam WellsNov 3, 2011

In life, there are a few things that you should 100 percent not do under any circumstances. Near the top of that list is making Manny Pacquiao angry. But Juan Manuel Marquez apparently does not have any inhibitions about calling out the best and most dangerous boxer on the planet right now.

In the buildup to their Nov. 12 clash, Marquez has basically said that he is going to destroy Pacquiao, and that their first two fights – one of which ended in a draw, the other a split decision for Pac-Man – were his and he got screwed.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, has taken a silent approach. He is going on with his training and all the media events as if this is any other fight, at least to the casual observer.

As Arash Markazi of ESPN Los Angeles wrote, Pacquiao’s fire is burning a little bit higher for this fight than almost any other fight in his illustrious career.

"

Pacquiao said he's been looking forward to this fight ever since Marquez wore a shirt which read, "Marquez Beat Pacquiao Twice!!" last November after defeating Michael Katsidis to retain his lightweight titles. Pacquiao defeated Marquez by a split decision in 2008, and their first fight in 2004 ended in a draw.

–snip–

There is a picture of Marquez wearing the shirt behind the speed bag Pacquiao hits every day at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood. As Pacquiao pummeled the bag on Wednesday, his eyes were transfixed on the picture as his trainer Freddie Roach looked on.

"

Marquez may have a claim to beating Pacquiao the first time they fought in 2004, but he was not the better man the second time around four years later.

Pacquiao is not the same fighter he was in 2008. He is a much better all-around fighter and has managed to get stronger and faster in the process.

Marquez has taken a few steps back from where he was three years ago. He is 38 years old, his speed and quickness are not what they once were.

At some point, all the talk and arrogance of Marquez is going to catch up to him and he will finally be knocked out.

Pacquiao already had the strength and speed in his repertoire to knock Marquez out. Now he has a little extra motivation, not that he needed it, to deliver a beating the likes of which we haven’t seen from any fighter in a long time.

Hopefully Marquez knows what he is doing, because his mouth has written some big checks that his body is going to have to cash.
