WWE WrestleMania X8: Christian vs. DDP Was a Forgotten, Classic Match
WWE WrestleMania X8 was a very good event!
Most remember the Hulk Hogan vs. The Rock match. Others may think of The Undertaker vs. Ric Flair. Some may even enjoy Triple H coming back from injury to win the WWE Undisputed Championship.
However, there was another match that night that I look back on fondly. It was the European title bout of the night with Diamond Dallas Page defending his championship against Christian.
It may have been early on in the show, but it got a lot of attention. First, Christian requested to be announced from Tampa, Florida. Of course, the event was in Toronto, Canada, so it was a great heel move on his part.
Then DDP got announced hailing from the Jersey Shore! Huh? I did not know that one. Page even got his own pyro for his entrance on this night.
Jim Ross immediately told the story of a young Dallas Page being the driver for Honky Tonk Man in his Pink Cadillac at WrestleMania VI from the same building (Toronto SkyDome). It was a fast and furious start to the story of the match.
A positive man in life finally getting his chance to wrestle at the grandest stage of them all after many years in the business. His opponent? Christian! A man who has done it all in WWE and had appeared at a couple of Mania events already. All for the European Championship.
As I said earlier, this may have been an undercard bout, but the match was given plenty of time to tell a story, while the crowd was with them the whole way. JR and Jerry "The King" Lawler on commentary always helps as well.
After a great 10-minute, back-and-forth match, DDP hit the Diamond Cutter and pinned Christian one, two, three to retain his title belt. It was a beautfil bout that never got dull. The fun was not over with yet...
DDP then cut a promo to rub it in for Christian, while Christian threw a temper tantrum in the ring. It was a classic moment on a great night of WWE action.
Some of you may be asking how (or why) I came up with this article idea. Well, I just watched the Very Best of WCW on Netflix, and I enjoyed watching DDP as the host. I thought of some of his best moments in WWE, and this one was right at the top of the list.
Truth be told, I am not a huge Dallas Page fan. I loved the Diamond Cutter. I love his positive outlook on life (as I have as well). However, I never become a big fan of his WCW/WWE runs.
He was a great talent to have on board. He was fun in certain segments, but I just never did "grasp" onto him for whatever reason. On this night, however, Page was a huge WWE superstar.
At WrestleMania X8, he and Christian put on an amazing match. He showed the world (and myself) just what he is capable of on a big stage. I send my congratulations to him on "quietly" putting on a classic WrestleMania bout.
Kudos to DDP. Kudos to Christian. Kudos to both men on a wonderful match that everyone should go out of their way to watch at least once. Trust me, it's not a bad match...it's a good match!
