Manny Pacquiao: Bob Arum's Modesty Will Motivate Pac-Man vs. Marquez

Adam WellsNov 2, 2011

Manny Pacquiao has done a lot of things in his long and illustrious career. He has beaten some of the best boxers in the world, and has looked great doing it. He has unbelievable speed and true knockout power.

But not even Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum thinks that his client will be able to do what no one has ever done: Knock Juan Manuel Marquez out. He made the statements to Abac Cordero of the Philippine Star on Wednesday.

"

“'When did Marquez ever get knocked out?' he asked.

Well, Marquez, at 38 probably the oldest Mexican champion out there, has been down a number of times, four times against Pacquiao.

But knocked out? Never.

'I don’t remember,' Arum continued.

He said while everybody around Pacquiao, including his legions of fans, is calling for a knockout, it’s really easier said than done."

Marquez's granite chin speaks for itself, but at some point every fighter runs into that punch that drops them to the canvas.

Pacquiao is determined to end this fight early after his previous two fights with Marquez had controversial decisions.

Arum, who is one of the most arrogant boxing personalities in the world, does not even think his client can knock Marquez out. That is going to serve as more motivation for Pacquiao.

Plus, you have to factor in Marquez's age and the number of fights he has under his belt. He is 38-years-old and has been boxing professionally for 18 years. That is a lot of punches to the face and body for a human to take.

Pacquiao is far superior to Marquez at this stage of their careers and is going to move in early and often to score the knockout.

Arum is trying to get under Pacquiao's skin a little bit, almost like a dare. He wants to see if Pacquiao has enough in him to do something that no one else has done.

Marquez has been doing a lot of talking leading up to this showdown, telling anyone who will stick a microphone in his face that he should have won the first two fights and is going to prove that with his performance this time.

Pacquiao has taken a much more reserved approach. He is saying all the right things and behaving like the perfect gentleman. But when the bell rings on Nov. 12, he will do anything and everything he can to finally knock Marquez out.
